Which engineering course should I apply to at uni?

Hi, I'm in Y12, studying Maths,Further Maths,History and Physics at A-Level. I'd like to do some type of engineering course at university, preferrably something to do with cars, energy, robotics or automation. I'm leaning towards more mechanical, but i'm not very sure yet. But, I definitely don't want to do Electronic and/or Electric Engineering, Biomed or Chemical. I'd like to apply to Russell Groups such as Imperial, UCL,Bristol, maybe Oxford if i feel confident enough in Y13. Please suggest anything I can do to research or just advice, any help is appreciated!!!

Good afternoon,

Choosing a university depends on what you want from your university experience. Every student wants something slightly different, such as a lecture-style approach or the option of exams versus no exams. I always recommend deciding what you want from your university and writing a list. You can compare the two universities to your own criteria; this means the university will be the best fit for you.

The Whatuni website is good for Finding a Course, as it has a full and comprehensive list with reviews. Similarly, the UCAS website has tips on comparing undergraduate courses and universities, which is a great way to narrow down your options.

The University of Reading offers an ambassador scheme, allowing prospective students to connect with current students through messaging; more information can be found here.

The University of Reading offers a range of Engineering courses that you may be interested in exploring.

All the best,
Ella

Mechanical engineering sounds like a great choice based on your interests. In regards to your interest in energy specifically you may want to consider energy engineering? It's a bit niche and I'm not sure which unis offer it as a course though.

If you're still undecided, try looking into unis which offer a general engineering degree, ideally one that allows you to specialise later on in the degree. I'm not sure which unis besides Cambridge do this, but it might be a good idea.

If you don't want to do EE or chemical engineering it feels like your options within the energy regime are kinda limited...? Also bear in mind robotics involves electronics.

It probably sounds like you should go with mechanical engineering based on your interests though.

hii, I was in the exact same position as you, and ive now decided on mechanical engineering as opposed to civil or electrical engineering. the number one thing that helped me decide was actually doing work experience in everything you’re interested in, as well as some short moocs in each field. id say if in doubt, go for mechanical, because it has a bit of everything.

can i ask what work experience you did? was it online/virtual ones or in person. right now i am struggling a bit in finding in-person work experience for anything engineering related.

There's Automotive Engineering with EV which Brookes offer. Forget RG as it's not relevant to Engineering. Look for degrees with placements and some unis offer Formula Studnet where you build a race car - again Brookes has the best UK results and Bath is also good.

As above, forget RG and other 'badges' - for Auto and Motorsport Engineering, Brookes, Coventry and Brunel are the best Unis in the UK for this area. There are also General Engineering courses at many Unis where you don't decide which area to specialise in until after the first year :
General Engineering BEng | University of Leicester
General Engineering BEng (Hons) | Undergraduate study | The University of Sheffield
BEng (Hons) General Engineering | University of East London
etc

hi yes ofc!! one of my friends had a connection to a civil engineering and construction firm, and i did a week there in the February half term, which is where i realised i hated civil eng. i then did a 3 week placement over the summer at the material processing institute where i was placed with a bunch of different engineers, scientists, etc. if you need some links to some virtual wex i can send you links. finding wex took a lot of time for me, id recommend asking your careers advisor.

thanks alot!! i have found a few virtual ones, but i'm not sure how realistic they are in terms of what working is actually like. also just out of curiosity, what made you hate civil engineering? i have been considering it for a bit, but i would really like to hear what was not so great about it for you.

for me, civil engineering didn’t have a lot of excitement to it, it just seemed quite mundane: walking around sites all day, taking measurements and just evaluating things, no real creative or design work, which i thought it was. i thought it’d be more city planning and building planning etc, but realistically it’s more water treatment on a building site, surveying construction, evaluating the soil and the ground, etc. but, to each their own, maybe you’ll like it!!
