MBBS Year 1 Textbooks and Resources

Hi everyone,

I'm a first-year medical student at Newcastle University. I'm 1 month into my curriculum, and I'm struggling with my study process. None of my past study methods don't seems to be efficient with my current workload, and I'm feeling very unsupported by my university. Obviously, when I study, I study to prepare for my final exams, and I usually prepare for them from the start. I have asked so many of my seniors and teachers about textbooks, and nearly all of them were useless and said just stick with the slides.

However, since we are taught case-based, I feel that all the information is just muddled up, and so stressful to think about revising it. I'm just about finishing my Foundation block, and that alone has 40 topics/ sets of slides ranging from 40-60 pages. And I have 13 more cases to study.

In my ideal world, I would love to have a revision guide of some sort, like how we had CGP for A Levels, and just build on it and have 1 book for each subject I know like the back of my hand and can easily revise. Obviously, I know that's not possible. Or at least I have yet to discover. I've tried writing my own notes, but it takes like 1 hour per topic, which just wastes so much of my time because I already have classes from 9-5:30 pm, and the 1 hour is just for note-taking and does not account for my actual understanding of the topic.

Now on to the main point, I have found out about The Crash Course Series by Elsevier. The books look approachable and not stressful-looking. They have it in some of the major subjects that I'm interested in. Any reviews on it? Does it actually cover the entire syllabus from year 1 - year 5? Does it have all the details in it, or does it require me to add them myself? I don't mind adding a few details here and there, but if I need to write a whole chapter, then it's a problem. I just want a textbook for each subject that doesn't look like it'll kill me. Does anyone actually recommend it? I haven't seen anyone talk of it? Do you guys have your own recommendations?
