OCR Computer Science A-Level NEA

Hi all, I'm a year 12 doing computer science and was wondering if this idea for my NEA is alright:
If you go on holiday or are forgetful, and you have plants that need water and care, they will die due to lack of water
Program something to sense the water content in the soil
When water content drops to a certain level, triggers a release of water into the plant pot
Maybe also add a camera to take a picture per week to send via email to owner to show plant is alright and alive?
Does anyone know of any sensors or any equipment that works with Raspberry Pi that could be used in this? Is this project a good idea and feasible?

My dad thinks maybe this is a better idea:
You want to protect your garden from foxes etc. making dirt in your plants and lawn
Set up a camera that detects when fox comes
Trigger sprinkler/light/high frequency sound to scare away fox
Have camera record this and send to owner via email or notification

Which should I do?

Either seem good, the second one does seem quite complex though.

Have you consulted your teacher for advice?

I only told my teacher about the first idea, she though it was very good and an 'out of the box idea', esp. as she had that problem herself with the plants
