personal statements and ai

to what extent is ai allowed in your personal statment and if i run it through a ai detector will it flag on thier systems when they check it for them selves?

You actually aren’t allowed to use AI at all. When submitting your application there is a disclaimer that states that everything should be your own original work and detection of plagiarism can result in a rejection of your application.

HOWEVER, the quality of AI is so good these days that most stuff flags as AI even having written it entirely yourself. So, generally it’s fine if you asked it to help with structuring, proofreading or finding resources. Any references should either be in quotes or at least acknowledge the source so the reader knows you aren’t trying to claim it as your own. As long as you haven’t lifted whole paragraphs you should be fine.

Pretty sure they do. If it’s your own words it’s fine. As I said everything gets flagged as AI these days so unless its a pretty high flagging percentage they won’t bother to follow up.

Hey there 👋

My name is Siobhan and I’m a recent graduate from the University of Lancashire 🎓 This is a great question and I’m sure you’re not the only one wondering this as AI starts to become more involved in our everyday lives!

I personally have some experience in the selection process as I helped out in the interviews for a physiotherapy course! One comment that was made by the lecturers was how they could tell a lot more people were using AI in their personal statements. This made it harder to assess people accurately, which sometimes affected their decision to offer places.

I would advice only advise using AI to give you an idea for a structure of what to follow. Universities have AI and plagiarism checkers which can detect if you have used AI to write your statement or not. This includes paraphrasing and even short sentences written by AI, as it can compare the style of the rest of your statement (I know this because we talked about it in assignments writing and it’s exactly the same)

I use AI to give me a rough idea of structure and ideas to work on but don’t use it to write things for me or paraphrase. I also wouldn’t recommend putting your whole statement into AI to “refine” it as some databases claim the whole statement as there’s which means that when it is checked by AI checkers, it can come back as 100% 😬

If you’re struggling on where to start or how to word things then I would have a look at some examples online!! Use them for inspiration as these will have more of a human tone to them and you can understand why they stick out to readers 🙂

You could also get 1 or two people to proof read your statement before submitting it to give you the reassurance that you’re on the right track and can get your point across well. Remember to show good understanding and passion in your statement and to remain true to yourself and your values ❤️

Hope this helps and please let me know if you have any questions at all.

You aren't permitted to use AI at all - as I understand the UCAS declaration includes you declaring you did not use AI to generate any of your application.

Moreover, if you can't write a very short piece of writing about the course you purportedly want to study for the next 3+ years without using AI, then realistically uni may not be the right path for you anyway.

If you write it yourself it won't be flagged as AI...because as it's a personal statement, nobody else is going to have the exact same motivations and experiences as you that you are writing about and reflecting on, hence an AI cannot generate an identical response.
