University options for bio courses?

Hey, I’m wondering if my university options are realistic or not?

GCSES: 9888777765 (9 in English lang, 8 in biology & maths, 6 in chemistry- as relevant)

Predicted grades:

Biology: A
History: A
Psychology: B

Places:

Liverpool: ABB (BBB for contextual)
York: AAA (AAB for contextual)
UEA: BBB (BCC for contextual)

And I’m not sure of my other two places. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! I’m hoping to apply for Biology (Microbiology or Molecular and Cell, with either integrated masters or placement year)

Hi @wh1zzer

Great to hear you are considering UEA! The other thing to note about applying for any of the biological sciences courses here is that if you miss your offer, you will be offered a place on the biological sciences foundation year course if you are eligible. I would encourage you (if you haven't already) to come to one of our open days to learn more about the courses and you can also chat to the staff about the offers and what happens on results day if you are worried!

I hope this helps, do let me know if you have any more questions!

I do!

Look at Bristol - Undergraduate | School of Cellular and Molecular Medicine | University of Bristol - lots of different pathway options. And Newcastle - Biology and Biomedical Sciences | Subject Area | Newcastle University. Scroll down for the range course options for both of these.

And wherever possible, pick a course with a placement or study abroad - this adds enormously to your graduate CV.

Hi there!

It's great to hear that you're interested in studying at York 🎉 Those predicted grades sound amazing well done!

The entry requirements for our MBiol (Integrated Masters) Biology course and our MBiol Molecular Cell Biology course are AAA at A level, including Biology and a second science. Your A level subjects meet the requirements, as we class psychology as a science subject, but your predicted grades are slightly under our standard offer, which may affect your chances of getting an offer from us.

However, you do meet the entry requirements for our BSc Biology course or BSc Molecular Cell Biology course (AAB, including Biology and a second science). One option you have is to apply to BSc course, and switch onto the MBiol later down the line. In my experience (I studied BSc Biology at York between 2018 and 2022), students on the BSc Biology courses have the option to apply to switch onto the MBiol (Integrated Masters) course at the end of their second year. Whether you're successful will depend on how many places are available and your performance so far in the degree.

Similarly, for placement years or years in industry, you decide in the second year of the course whether this is something you want to do, you don't apply for it upfront through UCAS.

I think you stand a really good chance of getting an offer from us, but I'd recommend getting in touch with the Biology admissions team by phone ( +44 (0)1904 328548) or email ( [email protected]) to discuss your options

I hope this helps!
Hannah
