Six ways to get the most out of Open Days

Planning uni visits? Open Days are a big part of deciding where you’ll spend the next few years, and that might feel a bit daunting. So, here’s how to make the most of them (and have fun while you’re at it) 👇

1. Dive into your subject
If there are immersive subject sessions, get involved. That way you’ll get a real taste of your future course, meet your future lecturers, and get an idea of the facilities. It’s the best way to find out if a course actually excites you!

2. Build your own day
What if an Open Day could be more than just a few talks and a campus tour? Take a look at the programme and pick what is most important to you and realistic within the time you’ve got. You’re in charge, so create a day that’s tailored to your interests, your questions, and your future. Want more info on careers? Head to that talk. Want to check out the campus cafés? Do that too.

3. Got questions? Ask them.
Staff and students are there to answer your questions. Make a long list (yes, really), and ask everything. How will your degree connect you to industry? What financial support is available during your degree? Are there placement opportunities? What’s the best pizza place near campus? Ask away.

4. Chat to current students
What better way to learn about student life than from students themselves. They’ll give you the inside track on campus life. Ask them anything, from what it’s like to study there to where to get the best coffee on campus.

5. Get to know the campus
Take the official campus tour but also give yourself time to wander and explore the area or city. You might have seen it online, but there’s nothing like seeing it in person to decide if it’s somewhere you could actually see yourself living.

6. Don’t ditch your parents and supporters just yet
Bring them with you. Your support system matters. Keep an eye out for dedicated sessions for parents, carers and supporters to help them understand university life and how they can help you thrive.
