York clearing for International Relations

Hallo, my daughter got BBC in her A levels after a tough time and would like to go to York to do International Relations but the course requirements on the website are AAB. She is planning to apply for 2026 entry and would probably be eligible for a contextual offer. I know some universities drop their grades a lot in Clearing, but does anyone have experience about York? I guess she can just wait and see but she gets very anxious about it all. She may be better off trying to move on and apply to safer unis. Thanks in advance!

1) Check to se if she is actually eligible for a contextual offer - don't guess.Contextual offers and admissions - Undergraduate, University of York

2) If she isnt eligible for any lower grade offer, her chances of an offer are essentially zero. AAB to BBC is a 3-grade drop - York will not need to go that low to fill the course.

3) And even if this course was in Clearing (it probably won't be) they would still want the usual offer grades. The idea of Unis dropping grade requirements to silly levels in Clearing is a bit of a myth and it certainly wouldnt be the case with a top Uni like York.

4) Why isnt she resitting to get higher grades.

Hello,

Thank you for raising your query.

As you are aware, the grade profile you have described does not meet our typical offer. However, we would be able to consider your daughter's academic achievements fully at the time of application. In addition to grades, we assess ability and suitability for the course applied to, skills, interests, motivation and potential as indicated in the Personal Statement and Reference.

We consider all applications on an individual basis, however we are unable to guarantee an offer pre-application. It may be that we hold your daughter's application until the after UCAS deadline for equal consideration (14th January 2026) before we can make a decision. All decisions will be made by the UCAS deadline of 13 May 2026, and in many cases earlier than this.

I hope this helps. Please let us know if you have any other queries.

Best wishes,

J 🙂
