Hi,

I don’t study psychology myself, but I’ve found that making active recall resources, like flashcards or mind maps, based on your lectures can be really helpful. Even if your exams are open book, having these resources means you’re not trying to cram everything at the last minute.

Notes are useful, but turning them into flashcards or other active recall tools can make revising much quicker and more effective. You could also add key examples or summaries for each topic, so everything is easier to find when you need it.

Good luck with your studies,

Hi!

I found this quite tricky and also the transition from A Levels to uni in terms of assignments and revision was hard for me, so I thought I could help with some revision tips!

Starting early will be really helpful as this will mean you get lots of time to check over everything that you have learnt and go over it lots.

I also like to make flashcards as I find these one of the best ways to learn for me personally. It's good to go over your lecture notes and make good flashcards so that you can test yourself and I also like to get my housemates or family to test me too.

Another good tip is to teach someone what you have learnt so that you can check that you fully understand it. You can get them to ask questions and see if you know the answers just to check you know what you are doing.

There are also lots of different online tools you can use. Quizlet is a good one that I like to use.

Just in general, you might need to tr a couple of things before you find the best revision style for you as it is very subjective. There will be lots of different things to try and first year is a great time to try everything out so you can see what you like the best!

I would also say to make sure you make the most of your tutor's expertise as they will be very good for helping you out with this. You may also have an academic advisor of some kind so see fi you can make an appointment with them as they will help you too.

I hope some of this helps,

Hi @caitlynewwww 👋

Hope you are well. Thats a completely normal way to feel to be honest! For psychology I recommend doing some flashcards if it helps to test yourself as that can be the best way. Making sure notes are done clear and concise also helps as well as looking over the reading list as they can make topics easier to understand. Open book exams allow notes so yes that is enough 🙂

The earlier you start revising, the better it is, although what technique you need to use will be a largely personal choice and also dependant on the format of your exams. You should find out what sort of exam they will be - at my psychology degree I've had both MCQs and essay exams, which are obviously very different to prepare for. Also do double-check if the exams are open book, you don't want to get a nasty surprise come January in case they're not!

Hey,

I totally get where you’re coming from… starting uni can feel like being thrown into the deep end with zero instructions 😅

It’s great that you’re already thinking ahead, but honestly, try not to stress too much about exams just yet. It’s easy to get overwhelmed if you’re planning everything months in advance. Right now, focus on staying on top of whatever assignments or readings you’ve got set, that’s what’ll really help you in the long run.

If you start worrying too much about exams that are still months away, it can make you lose focus on what’s actually important right now. Just make good, clear notes from lectures and readings that you can come back to later. When the exams get closer, you’ll have a much better sense of what’s important and how you like to revise, that’s when flashcards or summaries will be more useful.

Take it one step at a time. You’ll find your routine and what works best for you soon enough.

Good luck! Sophie 🙂

Hi there,

It really depends. I would advise you to keep your notes organised and go through them regularly. Flashcards are helpful, and you can try them for your first exam. Then you will see if you actually need them or not, and adjust for the following exams.

Good luck with your studies,

Hi,
I totally get it how confusing it is in first year, it was the same with me as well😂. I am a 3rd law year student now and though I do not study psychology I am happy to share some general study tips that could be useful. Personally, I would say making notes as you go is likely to be a lot more helpful instead of doing them right before exams even though they are in Jan. That way you would have everything organized before exams which makes revision lot easier. Speaking from personal experience it makes revision more effective as you can spend the time going through the important topics, doing practice questions rather than rushing to make notes ( been through that in my first year😂 it made exam period lot more stressful and messy).

Whether flashcards are necessary depends on the way you process information better. I personally did not use flashcards as much and mostly studied from my notes. I found handwriting stuffs helped me remember better but a lot of my friends used flashcards and found them very useful.

Best wishes

Hi there @caitlynewwww ,
Different ways of note taking works differently for everybody. I personally like to keep a google docs/ slides with all of my notes in point form with images 🤗 This helps me keep track of all that has been taught and allows me to have a brief overview at my fingertips.
Take this time in first year to see what is the best studying method that works for you 😗

Hi 😊 I totally get how you're feeling, I did biological psychology in my first and second year, and it can definitely feel like a lot at first. For my exams, they weren't open-book, but even if yours are, I'd definitely recommend making flashcards 📚. They help so much when it comes to revising because you can quickly test yourself and go over key theories, studies, and definitions without rereading pages of notes. It also saves a lot of time later on, once you've made them, you can reuse them next year since a lot of the topics tend to overlap or build on each other 💡. Having those flashcards ready makes revision way less stressful because you've already done most of the groundwork. Plus, regularly going through them helps you properly understand and remember the information, not just cram it. So yes, notes 📝 are great for understanding, but flashcards are a huge help for long term learning and saving time down the line!
