do AS grades impact uni applications??

I’m currently in year 13 aiming for the best unis. From what I’ve heard top unis such as Oxbridge, LSE and Imperial put a high emphasis on achieved grades. My gcse grades are not great (877665544) but in my AS i managed to achieve AAAA. i was wondering if this would benefit my application in any way and maybe even make up for my gcses?

Yes absolutely. Because your AS grades will have a far more greater weighting in the admissions process. So, please list your grades on the UCAS form. 🙂

I wonder which degree course you're applying for and which AS/A-Level subjects you have studied?

Surely you should consider Cambridge University instead of Royal Holloway?

It does not matter. The LNAT is just a test for admissions. Some people get in with a score as low as 16 out of 42.

Hi,

Short answer: AS grades help, but they don’t replace minimum GCSE requirements.

Oxbridge/LSE/Imperial mainly judge on predicted A levels, admissions tests, interview, and subject performance. Strong AS is a positive signal and can offset middling GCSEs to a degree, especially if your school flags context, but you must still meet each course’s GCSE minima. Make sure your referee highlights your AS results and momentum, and prep hard for any required admissions tests.

Best,
Daniel

Thank you! I meet the minimum requirements for the unis i’m applying to. I’m just a bit worried because I’ve seen people get rejected from unis like LSE due to their GCSES even though their grades have been better than mine 😅

Try not to worry too much about what has happened to other people's applications. You simply don't know what the rest of the application looked like and what the admissions team for each university is looking for.

Instead revert your attention to your own application, and focus on your strong suits. Make sure to include all your extra-curriculars, any work experience you have, make sure you prove why you're interested in law in your personal statement. But most importantly, make sure you get the best grades possible in your final exam and that your predicted grades are what you want them to be.

I know it's a stressful time, but don't restrict your options based on what could go wrong. Make sure to include aspirational universities in your choices because who knows, you might just get in.
