Will KCL take me for PPE?

Hello!! I'm a gap year student, and have A*AA in maths, fm and econ. What are my chances of getting in for PPE with this subject combo and a good ps? Thank you

Only KCL can give definite answer. KCL iand PPE are both competitive. Don't overthink, put down KCL in your UCAS application and add 1 to 2 safe choices, just in case. Good luck.

you definitely have a chance. I did this exact subject combination after rethinking about pure econ. took a gap year to re-do a levels in 2023 and managed to get the offer above people who weren't resitting, though this was because my ps was notably good (asked my school's sixth form for their opinions on it). notice how they actually don't have any subject requirements if that reassures you; it really is about the ps. the maths and further maths will help you with the quantitative aspects of the module, and in year 2 if you decide to do the BSc pathway (intermediate macro, micro and econometrics must be taken).

your ps really had to be well tailored to the course and you have to touch upon philosophy, politics and economics as it is an interdisciplinary (even if it is just one paragraph on philosophy; could even make this political philosophy related which is what I did). link the ps to your background if you can to make it more personal (which is again what I did). for guidance, as an outline it could be something like intro (talking about why ppe and explain why it is more suitable/desirable for you above pure econ & how it ties in with your background), 1 paragraph about econ, 1 paragraph about econ-pol (geopolitics or smth), one paragraph about pol-philo (political philosophy), and then ending paragraph about achievements and your looking forward to the mathematics involved in the course (which there is - quantitative methods), maths challenges etc.; could link this to utility maximisation functions/calculus & statistics for example.

so essentially just make sure that your ps is solid and you'll be patterned.

Thank you so much, I can’t tell you how relieving this is to hear after a whole evening of trying not to break down over applying to universities again. Gap yearing is really starting to take a toll on me. Anyways I have a couple of questions, if you don’t mind answering

What grades did you apply with? Can universities see previous applications done to them and so do i need to dedicate a part of my ps to why i’ve decided to change to PPE? Lastly, how are you finding the course? I’m especially interested in the philosophy side since I can’t find much info!

Thank you very much again 🙏🙏🙏

ahh you are welcome; i remember being in the same position. i applied with ABB and predicted that I will get A*AA, though I ended up with what contextual offers would be which is AAB though I had developed health troubles out of the blue at during at around April time back then. Universities can in fact see previous applications if you had applied to them previously I believe; or at least this is what I was told by my sixth form. I had applied to KCL for econs and been rejected with A*A*A* predicted perhaps based off of my ps back then. And yes; when I say in the intro in the aforementioned comment, "talking about why ppe and explain why it is more suitable/desirable now* for you above pure econ" - this is what I meant. Make it a bit subtle if that makes sense like after duh duh duh I realised that I am more drawn to the interconnection of the disciplines rather than pursuing econs alone etc.

I love the course actually; it's really well done. my favourite modules in year 1 were comparative politics and quantitative methods actually; the philosophy I & II were both interesting too (ethics, metaphysics etc.) but when it came to exams it was hard to get firsts in those as they are more subjective in nature. the political & economics philosophy module was also nice as well; welfare of the state, marx etc. but again I would say the same issue when it came to the writing exams. principles of economics was alright but the lecture slides were really long lol.

and again you are very welcome💯
