Why you should start thinking about a Master’s early?

As a current postgraduate student in Psychology at the University of Reading, I often find myself reflecting on how useful it would have been to start thinking about a Master’s earlier in my undergraduate degree. Planning ahead is not about knowing exactly what you want to do, it’s about giving yourself the time and flexibility to make well-informed choices!

Here is what I have learnt along the way:

1. Career and education planning:
One of the biggest benefits is that it gives you space to explore whether postgraduate study is the right path for you. A Master’s degree is more independent and research-focused than undergraduate study. Considering it in advance allows you to reflect on your motivations, pinpoint areas of genuine interest, and decide whether you enjoy the kind of academic work that postgraduate study involves and whether you want a taught or research masters. This process can help you determine whether further study aligns with your long-term goals too.

2. Finances:
Early planning also makes a huge difference when it comes to funding. Postgraduate degrees can be expensive, and knowing your options in advance makes them much more manageable. You’ll have time to explore scholarships, apply for the government postgraduate loan, or plan relevant part-time work and internships that can both strengthen your CV and support you financially.

3. Make the most out of your undergraduate:
Thinking ahead can also help you make the most of your undergraduate years. Once you have an idea of where your interests lie, you can tailor your dissertation topic, select optional modules that fit your future plans, and look for experiences that will enhance your application. Volunteering, gaining research experience, or completing placements in relevant settings all provide valuable insights and skills that universities look for. Starting these experiences early also helps you build relationships with lecturers who may later become your referees.

If you’re currently studying and beginning to think about postgraduate study especially in Psychology or a related field, feel free to ask questions!
