Cardiff work experience

Hi everyone!

I was wondering if anyone from Cardiff who’s studying (or planning to study) Medicine knows of any good super-curricular opportunities? I’ve heard that the doctor shadowing scheme run by Cardiff Uni has been discontinued, which is a shame.

It feels like there are so many great work experience options for other subjects, but not much out there specifically for Medicine. I’d really appreciate any suggestions or ideas for things that would be valuable to get involved in!

Thanks so much 😊

Hi there,

It is great to hear you are so passionate about not just your studies but also extra-curricular activities. We have a page dedicated to different extra-curricular activities specifically for medicine students, see this link here for lots of opportunities. Also if you are interested in paid opportunities I would keep an eye on Job Shop, which is specifically for Cardiff University Students finding work flexible around studies, and there will be things like Research Assistant roles, for MEDIC ambassador roles etc.

I hope this is helpful, any other questions feel free to let me know,
All the best,

Thank you for the link! I really appreciate it. Also I am not sure if you know , but does Cardiff uni accept students being research assistants for professors/students doing PHD?

Applying for Medical School - Online Course - FutureLearn
The NHS in England Explained - Online Course - FutureLearn
So You Want to Study Life Science? - Online Course

Suggested reading etc -
Medicine: Introductory Reading University of Oxford, Medical Sciences Division
You don't need to read all of them - and most will be available through your local public library (just ask the librarians for help) or 2nd hand on Ebay.

If you are not applying this year, there are also some good online sessions coming up from Uni of Leicester - Medicine, Dentistry and Healthcare University events at University of Leicester

Hiya, no worries, glad it was helpful.
Yes I am pretty sure you can, I have a couple friends doing PhD's and they have been research assistants, however I would suggest talking to your supervisor and checking you can manage your time, and maintain your PhD commitments, as there could be case-by-case recommendations. I hope this helps, and best of luck!
