Leeds Vs Sheffield Medicine

Hi,
I am preparing to submit my application for medicine, but my fourth choice I am struggling to decide between Sheffield and Leeds.
Sheffield seems to be a higher post interview offer rate (though it is hard to tell as Leeds does not release much info).
Also I think I would prefer a more traditional teaching style/curriculum as I want a strong grounding in science- but it is hard to compare their courses as the websites are pretty vague.
I would be grateful for any help! Thank you

Hi @nihilhic!

I can only really speak from my experience of the Sheffield course, but I've really enjoyed the Medicine degree here so far!

At Sheffield Medical School, the first 2 years are 'preclinical', and the latter 3 are 'clinical'. In first year, you are taught normal physiology, giving you a strong grounding in how the 'normal'/ 'healthy' body functions. Anatomy is also taught alongside this. In second year, you are then taught pathophysiology, and start learning about how different medical conditions manifest. I found that this structure of teaching made a lot of sense to me, and helped me to have a good baseline knowledge before beginning clinical placement towards the end of Second Year.

Sheffield also focus on communication skills and patient interaction from the start of the course, which I personally really enjoyed. It was nice knowing that I would have some experience in speaking to patients before the end of Second Year! I definitely think this helped me to better prepare for starting clinical placement, and just gave me a little more confidence in making the transition from pre-clinical to clinical years!

I'm unsure if you will have seen our website already, but it gives a good overview of what each year of the course entails. I'll link it below:

I hope my experience somewhat helps in answering your question! Was there any part of the course in particular that you wanted more info on? 😊
