Struggling at University? Read this.

Hi everyone, it’s Chris here from University of Staffordshire’s Wellbeing team to give you some support.

Just started at uni and feeling the pressure to fit in or keep up? Or maybe you’re back for another year and the deadlines are already stacking up. If you’re feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or just a bit lost, you’re not alone.

We often hear about being kind to others, but how often do we show that same kindness to ourselves? If you’re stuck in a spiral of self-critical or negative thoughts, take a moment to check in:

Would I speak to a friend the way I’m speaking to myself?

How can I support myself instead of tearing myself down?

What’s something I can do to take care of myself today?

Instead, try a little self-compassion💛 That means:

Talking to yourself with encouragement, not criticism

Letting go of perfection

Accepting your mistakes as part of learning

Need help reframing your inner critic? Over on Instagram, we’re sharing some examples of how to shift your perspective for World Mental Health Day on 10 October.

And yes, perspective shifts don’t happen overnight. Growth can be slow, messy, and nonlinear and that’s okay. But, a different view can lead to deeper empathy for ourselves and others.

This is your reminder to prioritise yourself

If you’re struggling, remember that it's okay to not be okay. Your mental health matters just as much as your physical health. Here are a few other ways to nurture your mental well-being:

Take time for yourself even if it's just a few minutes of mindfulness or deep breathing.
Reach out talk to a friend, family member, or professional if you're struggling.
Start the conversation breaking the stigma around mental health helps others feel seen and supported.

Some great tips! The wellbeing team have been a star throughout so many student's journeys at University. As a subject rep, I've often signposted students to this team who handle situations brilliantly.
