Studying at City St Georges, University of London’s Clerkenwell and Moorgate campuses means you're surrounded by history, great coffee, and quiet spots that can seriously level up your day while being within walking distance from our campuses. Here are a few hidden gems I discovered and how they helped me stay balanced during the busier weeks.
1. Catalyst Café – Northampton Square
Right near Clerkenwell campus, this café is a calm alternative to the busier chains. Great coffee, snacks, and usually a free table.
When the library felt too stuffy, I’d head here for a quick coffee break. Plus, their Baba Ganoush is to die for!
2. The London Centre for Book Arts
Tucked away in Clerkenwell, this artsy spot offers bookbinding workshops and creative exhibitions. Even just walking through is inspiring.
I stopped by once out of curiosity and ended up spending a quiet hour browsing which was a nice little reset.
3. Postman’s Park
Just a short walk from Moorgate, this peaceful green space is perfect for a quick breather between classes. Bonus: the memorial wall is a cool bit of hidden history. The memorial wall honours ordinary people who died saving others.
I’d sometimes eat lunch here when I needed fresh air and a break from my screen.
4. Exmouth Market
A local favourite near Clerkenwell with amazing street food, cute shops, and great coffee. Ideal for lunch or a post-class snack.
This was my go-to spot after long lectures, the fresh pasta and buzz of the market always helped me recharge.
5. Barbican Conservatory
A few minutes from Moorgate, this indoor tropical garden is totally free and often quiet during weekdays.
Whenever I needed a quick break from city noise, I’d pop in and chill among the plants, very underrated, and I'd highly recommend.
6. St John’s Gate
A historic site right in Clerkenwell that most people walk past without noticing. It's home to a small museum and free to visit. The gate dates back to the 1500s and now houses a small museum about the order’s history and medical work.
I randomly explored it once between lectures and it was a cool way to break up the day and learn something new.
7. Whitecross Street Market
Close to Moorgate, this lively street market has some of the best lunch options around. Arrive early to avoid the office rush.
When I got bored of meal deals, this was my upgrade, great food and good vibes without going far always led to a great afternoon.
Whether you need a break, breather or bite, these hidden gems are worth exploring!
