Where to go for games animation?

Really niche, I'm aware, but I know the courses exist, its just choosing where lol. I've been looking at Hertfordshire, Escape studious and Staffordshire as my main three, but I guess another question I have is: What course do I do? Staffordshire has its own games animation course so that's a clear pick, but escape and hertfordshire (along with others) have a games course, and then a 3d animation course. How do I decide which route to go down? For a little bit of context I have about 5 years of personal animation experience, working on my own stuff along with mods and doing some odd freelance jobs, so I will not be a beginner to animation or the software if that makes any difference. Also just think its worth noting that I think a big thing holding me back from escape as well is the accom prices and how far they are away from campus, so I would like to hear about some people's experience with that too. Thanks!

Hi @armadibof i think it’s worth visiting them in person as this will help you decide after talking to lecturers and students in person. Seeing the facilities in person and what the campus is like also really helps with making your decision. I did my art foundation at Manchester Metropolitan university and I know they have a few different games related degrees such as games design, games art and computer games development, maybe it’s worth also checking them out?

Hope this helps,

Hi there  I work as a technical artist in the UK games industry.
I like your shortlist - definitely would have been on my suggestions for you! I think in terms of Games vs 3D animation - the advantages from doing games-specific courses are going to be learning about game-ready specifications i.e. the kind of performance and optimisation considerations you need for real-time vs. pre-rendered animation for films and tv, but I would anticipate most other games courses (i.e. Games design, Games art) to have limited room to do animation as it will focus more on other disciplines. I would probably ask at open days for the animation courses whether they teach real-time optimisation principles.

I think if you're wary about Escape accom prices - A) totally understandable B) I don't think they're markedly any better (or worse, particularly, but possibly more risky) than Staffs or Herts, so I would probably just prioritise one of them. I spoke in a bit more detail about Escape on this thread, if you're interested.

Feel free to shoot me any other Qs you have. Best of luck!

Hi @armadibof, we asked one of our Games students Akira for this thoughts:

Hi, I'm a current Games Design/Programming student at the Uni of Staffordshire and we are very pleased you are considering us for your course, here are some of my thoughts.

The Uni offers several different options for Animation, including Animation, Games Art, Concept Art and Games Design with Animation and you can pick the choice that most fits your needs!

We have Open Days coming up at both our Stoke-on-Trent campus and London campus this month, November and December where you could take a look and get some of your questions answered on the best options for you. From a personal point of view, 3D animation in this Uni is very advanced so I'd feel you'd have no problem fitting in and learning new things which I'm sure is why you're here in the first place!

In addition, I'll pop down some pages for you to look at if needed:

You could also have a little look around our campuses in Fortnite to get a feel for them - Welcome to the first Fortnite University: StaffsVerse - The Student Room

Good luck with your decision!! Please let me know if you have any more questions.
