Interview for Biomedical Science degree

I'm applying to university next year, but I need to submit my application this year. Honestly, I'd prefer not to do an interview if possible. I was wondering if interviews are required for Biomedical Sciences at the University of Kent, University of Exeter, University of Plymouth, or Cardiff University?

Biomedical Science is a course whereby you do not need require an interview to attend the course. I do however notice you put on that list Exeter and Cardiff which do not offer IBMS accredited degrees, however, the other two do.

Are you aware of that before taking the course and the importance of it as it is essential to work as a biomedical scientist in the UK?

This is only important if you just want to work in a lab. The reason that many RG etc Unis do not offer this accreditation is that their courses are orientated towards research and working in Industry. So, you don't need IBMS accreditation for employment - it is not 'essential' - it just depends what sort of career you are aiming at.

@Scienceisgood - if you are a school-leaver, you wont be interviewed unless you are applying to Oxford/Cambridge. Some older applicants and those with unconventional backgrounds might be interviewed by other Unis, but not '18 year-olds taking A levels'.

Yeah, that’s why I said as a biomedical scientist as it’s a protected title in the UK. Simply having a BMS degree does not automatically make you a BMS as are many pit falls, so when I see a mix of RG and non-RG unis, that’s when I start asking myself does the person know the value of IBMS accreditation as I’ve seen it with a fair few colleagues and students already at uni not realising this before they’re either half way through or in their final year or already graduated by which point it’s too late.

Again, this is misleading. Its possible to gain IBMS accreditation later - if actually needed by that individual for the sort of career they are aiming at :

If you’ve already completed a non-IBMS Accredited science degree, you may need to do extra study before registering as a biomedical scientist. This is called supplementary education.
The IBMS can assess your degree to see what’s missing and identify the subject areas you’ll need. Once you’ve completed these and the IBMS Registration Training Portfolio in an approved training laboratory, you will be awarded the IBMS Certificate of Competence which will enable you to register with the HCPC.
IBMS Accredited degrees - "Already have a degree?"

True but you will be banking on taking top up modules after graduation (further potential years at uni) and either your employer paying for it (unlikely, not impossible but unlikely) or paying it out of your own pocket.

So I wouldn’t say misleading if you’re willing to go back to uni after you’ve graduated if you wish to be a BMS.

Hi there! Great to hear you're considering Plymouth 🙂

I'd recommend emailing [email protected] to find out if an interview is required for the most up-to-date information on the process.

However, don't let any interviews put you off from applying as, although they seem a little worrying, it's a very common part of the application process for many courses and may open up your choices more to which universities you can choose. You might surprise yourself with how well you might do and there are lots of resources online to support your preparation for an interview!

You can also find other current application information here as well as register for an open day via this link (the best opportunity to check out facilities, get answers to your questions from students and staff, as well as get a feel for the location)!

Best of luck! 🙌

I was aware that Cardiff wasn´t accredited for biomed but I wasn´t aware of Exeter not being accredited so thank you for that. I think I might still keep Exeter but replace Cardiff with Keele University.
