Do not waste your time on this course. They had my previous post deleted which criticised the course. Unsure why an institution such as CSM wouldn’t allow freedom of speech.
I studied Jewellery Design at Central Saint Martins, and I wouldn’t recommend it. The course has a great reputation on paper, but the reality is very different.
Technical teaching is almost non-existent — you’re rushed through basic skills like soldering and CAD, then left to produce conceptual projects with little real guidance. It’s far more about theory and “ideas” than actually learning how to make jewellery. Tutors are often hands-off and feedback is inconsistent. The atmosphere is competitive, not supportive, and the pressure to produce something “avant-garde” can make you lose sight of why you wanted to design in the first place.
Many of us left feeling unprepared for work. Hardly any graduates get proper jobs in the jewellery industry — the skills just aren’t there. What you really pay for is the CSM name and a shiny reputation that doesn’t match the experience.
Many graduates including prize winners ended up without any job at all in jewellery.
When I tried to share my honest experience online, CSM had my post removed. That says a lot. The school is very good at curating its image, but not at listening to the people who actually study there.
If you’re serious about learning jewellery design, look elsewhere — somewhere that still values teaching, craft, and integrity over branding.
