Funding for Dentistry as someone who has a Masters degree

Hi there,

I have a masters degree (separate BSc and MSc) and I am applying to dentistry this year. I am applying to two 4-year graduate-entry programmes and two 5-year undergraduate programmes.

What kind of student finance would I be eligible for if I received offers from either the graduate and undergraduate programmes?

I have already had the following loans:
BSc - full maintenance and tuition fee loan which I am paying back every month through my paycheck.
MSc - postgraduate loan which I have already paid back in full.

Many thanks for your help

Hi there,

Can you confirm the full name of the course and university and we can check if this is an eligible course?

Thanks, Jason

Hi there,

Have you been accepted for any of the courses? Do you have a main university you want to attend and when would the course start?

Thanks, Drew

Hi Drew,

I’ve applied in this cycle for the Aug/Sept 2026 intake. I haven’t had an interview or received an offer yet.

I’m assuming the undergraduate course will be a lot more expensive for me but I’m keen to find out how much by as it may influence my decision if I get multiple offers (although, as dentistry is so competitive this may not be an issue…!)

Many thanks

Hi there,

A graduate entry dentistry course is classed as an exception course and we would not take your previous study into consideration when assessing you for funding. In the 1st year we will cover a tuition fee loan up to £5785 and you would need to self fund £3465. You can apply for the full Maintenance Loan. In years 2-4 we would pay a tuition fee loan of £5535 and the NHS would pay £3715. You can apply for a reduced rate Maintenance Loan.

Thanks, Drew

Thanks for your reply Drew,

Would I be eligible for any funding (either tuition fee loan or maintenance loan) on the 5-year undergraduate dentistry course or would I need to self fund?

Best wishes

Hi dutchgirl_,

Undergraduate Medicine and Dentistry are exception courses. Students that hold an ELQ are entitled to maintenance loan only for the first 4 years of the course. In the 5th year and any subsequent years of their course students are entitled to an income-assessed NHS bursary and, therefore, we award them the reduced rate of maintenance loan only.

Thanks, Clare
