Should I drop an alevel in year 13?

Im in my first term of Y13 and i take German, Art and Media, and im planning to do an art foundation course locally and then do art at uni. However at the moment i really want to focus on art and media, but i am currently really struggling in german being the worst in the class and not understanding anything. im predicted a D at the moment but im not very confident i will even get that. I feel like im wasting valuable time trying to understand the basics of the subject when i could be focusing my effort on Art and getting my B to an A. Would dropping German affect me getting into Uni when it isn't a relevant subject and im not getting good grades? and would taking an art foundation course make up in a way for doing 2 a levels?

Hi @ellajjaj, I did an art foundation because I didn’t do any relevant art a-levels to get me into university, from my experience they focus more on the fact that you did an art foundation than your a level results. The a-levels do still count as it all adds up to your overall UCAS points but universities favour art foundations massively. Dropping German could be an option but I would first discuss this with your art teachers and see how they think it could effect your application. It would also be worth emailing the place you want to do your art foundation at with your concerns as they will be able to give you the best and most relevant advice.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the reply! I’ve booked a meeting with my careers advisor so I’ll see what she says, however I know my school really discourages dropping an level so I’m worried they might make it difficult for me

I wad gonna say, would your school allow you to go down to doing only 2 a-levels?
It might be worth sticking with it and doing the 3. You might get a rubbish grade in your 3rd, but as you are doing a foundation course, that shouldnt matter too much.

Hiya!
I also did A-levels before applying to a creative course (Graphic Design)... I did German, Photography and Product Design. None of these actually directly link to the subject I chose.

I did a foundation year actually at my university (it's called Year 0). Whilst I needed a certain amount of UCAS points, it didn't matter at all for me personally that I actually did get a D in German - as I pulled through with my other subjects.

I'd recommend looking at the UCAS points requirements and where you want to go and getting some advice from your teachers 🙂

Even if you get a D in German, it's still worth 24 UCAS points.

My daughter struggles with depression and ended up with BCE for her A Level grades - that still equated to 88 UCAS points in total which was actually the offer given by her first choice uni (contextual offer) - she didn't need to do a Foundation. If she had only done 2 A Levels, she wouldn't have had enough UCAS points. So even a very low grade can make all the difference. She's studying BA (Hons) 3D Game Art now and really enjoying it.
