On the whole it should be fine but do be aware that you might be required to include different media by different unis. For example, when my YP applied, one uni wanted some photography whereas another didn't want any photography in the portfolio. Unis are not expecting to see architectural drawings. Have a look at the following thread:

Hi there,

That’s a great question, and it’s brilliant that you’re already thinking ahead about preparing for an Architecture degree. At London South Bank University (LSBU), your background in Fine Art is actually a really strong starting point for applying to Architecture, because both subjects develop creativity, observation, and design thinking, all of which are key skills in this field.

When applying for BA (Hons) Architecture or BA (Hons) Architecture with Foundation Year at LSBU, you will need to submit a portfolio as part of your application. However, you don’t necessarily have to start completely from scratch. You can absolutely use your existing Fine Art portfolio, as long as it demonstrates a range of visual and creative skills. The admissions team at LSBU is interested in seeing how you think, create, and communicate visually, not just architectural drawings.

That means your Fine Art work, such as drawings, paintings, collages, 3D work, or mixed media pieces, can definitely be included. You might just want to adapt or expand your portfolio slightly to show how you can apply your artistic skills to design and spatial concepts. For example, you could include sketches of buildings, photographs of urban spaces, or even small design projects or models that show your understanding of form, structure, and perspective.

At LSBU, the BA (Hons) Architecture course is validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and prescribed by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) for RIBA Part 1 exemption. This means you’ll be studying on a fully accredited programme that sets you on the path to becoming a professional architect. You’ll also learn in a creative, hands-on environment within LSBU’s dedicated Architecture and Design studios, supported by experienced tutors who help you build your portfolio and design identity throughout the course.

If you’d like to get a better idea of what LSBU looks for in portfolios or see examples of student work, I’d really recommend coming to our Open Day on Saturday 15th November. You can meet the Architecture team, explore the studios, and get advice on how to refine your Fine Art portfolio for your application.

👉 You can sign up here: LSBU Open Day.
👉 You can also chat with our students through our Unibuddy platform: Chat with our students.

So, to answer your question, yes, you can definitely use your Fine Art portfolio! Just tailor it a little to show your interest in space, design, and structure. LSBU values creativity and individuality, so your artistic background will absolutely work in your favour.
