The Student Room Group

If you have ANYTHING you need to talk to to do with exams, DO IT.

I took Senior Maths Challenge yesterday. I'm a great student and can anwer most BMO2 questions within the normal time alotted. It started off pretty well too. I finished 15 questions in the first 13 minutes. The problem is, I have rest breaks in exams, but was not permitted them by my school for this since there was no guidance online to prove I was allowed to use them in SMC. After I finished those 15, I zoned out, as has happened in EVERY exam I took before I got given rest breaks, and when I came back, 55 minutes had passed. I lost 55 minutes of a 90 minute paper. And because of that, I won't qualify for the competitions I wanted to qualify for, meaning I only have next year. This might seem like a first world problem, but this is applicable to any of you. If you think for ANY reason that you require additional assistance in exams, talk to your school, and if that fails, talk to your board. It is one of the most important things you can do at this stage, and I know I've talked about myself plenty, but I just want to mention one more example of this. I was predicted a 1 in English Literature due to my mock before rest breaks being absolute garbage for the exact same reasons above. I ended up with an 8 with my rest breaks. Even if you think what you have wouldn't be enough for special consideration, PLEASE at least try to discuss it with the relevant authorities. UKMT sent me an email less than an hour after I asked them (after the exam because I didn't ask beforehand, which I should've as stated above) saying that I was allowed rest breaks if I was allowed them in A-levels, and that's a massive shame, because if I had asked earlier, I would've done so much better than I ended up doing. I hope this helps anyone at all. Good luck. <3

Your school should contact UKMT and explain what they did wrong.

Note what it says about BMO.

Bit late now, and I'll be fine next year. Thanks though

I did. I'm fine with no rest breaks in BMO.

My reply is a bit late for you but you would have good grounds to request that your school enter you for BMO1 on a discretionary basis. In fact why don't you ask to sit BMO2 on a discretionary basis assuming you didn't do BMO1 (which was pretty tough this year btw) - the fee is £50. I think they owe you !

I would, but I haven't studied for BMO2 like ever. I've done a few questions and done pretty well but the actual exam is a different thing, and i don't know enough to get a good result. I'd rather just wait until year 13, get a good one then, won't have it before i apply, but will have it later when they actually consider me personally which is what i need
