Top up degree info please

Hello there
I am a mature student, in my early 50’s. 4 years ago I began a foundation degree at local college in Early Childhood Education. I deferred near to the end of year one due to extreme personal circumstance and repeated year 1 and finished the following year. My year two the extreme circumstances returned and my college suggested I deferred in the May and return to repeat year two the following year. Sadly, I myself suffered extreme ill health that year and did not complete year two 2025. My college group no longer teach at university level and I have just been told that I should apply for the top up year with the 120 credits I have from the first year of the foundation degree and 35 years of extensive childcare and education experience in a senior role. My college cannot give any guidance on what I should do next. Does anyone have any knowledge of this please? Many thanks. 🤩

Hiya! (:

that's fab that you've got the option of a top up program - its never too late to go back into education!😊 -im guessing this is a foundation year for a university course? - if thats the case, these are usually a year spent before starting the degree to fill up any potential gaps so everyones covered what they need to prior to the course and also a lot of them do study skill sessions and things like that to make the process of going back into a education setting a bit easier to manage (:

anything specific, such as the modules within this year i'd reccomend contacting the uni offering the course directly and they will be able to clarify this, they also should be able to outline to you the pathways after completing the top-up that are availble and also what you can do with the qualification 💜

hope this helps, best of luck!!

Thank you so much for your reply. The foundation degree is equivalent to the first two years of a degree and then the top up is the third year to give you your full degree. The foundation degree finishes after two years and you do not have to do the third (top up year) straight away if at all. I have been advised to seek a university top up year course who will consider my going straight into the top up as I’ve had extreme extenuating circumstances etc etc. I really appreciated your advice x
