Work experience for Neuroscience

I'm currently in year 13, and up until recently I was planning on doing medicine, but have decided to do either biomed or neuroscience at uni. I was wondering if doing medicine related work experience like hospital observerships and stuff is recommended? I would do psychology related ones but I don't take the subject

Hi there @naeehha ,

I thought I'd just share my experience as I thought that hearing a real-life anecdote might be useful. As a sixth former, I had no time for work experience and I also ended up choosing my degree quite last-minute, and so I had no real work experience in the Accounting and Finance sector, not even virtual. I still managed to put together a personal statement based on my school journey and any extracurriculars I could try to make seem relevant to the course. I ended up getting offers from Birmingham, Bristol, Southampton and Essex - which I think highlights that genuine interest seems to be the most significant thing that universities are looking for in students, most of whom I know do not have much, if any, work experience yet (as in, before university 😅). I then didn't get into my firm or insurance choices on results day, but I still then was able to receive an offer through Clearing from Southampton.

All this to say, I really wouldn't worry about having direct, in-person work experience, especially for healthcare, as it might be quite difficult to find, and universities know that. However, it would be great experience and something to talk about in your personal statement to demonstrate you going above and beyond the school curriculum! Honestly, any experience you can get would be useful, both for you to talk about but also genuinely for you to 'experience' those things and explore what you actually like or don't. You could also consider care homes, as this might more accessible than a hospital work experience.

I hope this all helps, and that you get all the offers you apply to 🤞
