Please help! Low UCAT - Desperate Mum

Hi all,

Please help. My son is heartbroken over his UCAT score. Think nerves got the better of him.

UCAT Score - 1730 SJT band - 2

GCSEs
Triple Science - 9, 9, 9
English Language - 8
English Literature - 7
Maths - 8
Ethics - 9
Business Studies - 9
History - 8

Predicted A Levels - A, A, A

His dream was Nottingham University and he has decided to keep them as an option and pray his high grades in GCSEs get him in.

We are now torn on
1) Keele 2) Aston 3) Sunderland 4) Cardiff

My head is overwhelmed with researching the ins and outs of these Universities. Can anyone please give advice on best options considering his UCAT score.

Please note my son is a Contextual Student ❤️

Hi @JessJustin7 ,

I'm sorry to hear that your son is upset over his results!

There are a small number of universities that do not require the UCAT, so if he is desperate to jump straight into medicine, these may be the right route.

The alternative is to do a course that he can then transfer onto medicine after a year. In that time he could also resit the UCAT. It differs between universities, but I recommend contacting the universities he is interested in and enquire about this. For example, some universities let medical science students and biomed students head onto medicine after one year of their course, however they are STILL competition with all the other candidates, so it is not a garentee.

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions,
-Sophia (University of Central Lancashire)

Do not start another degree and then change to medicine later.

Going to medical school, any medical school, is big cool. Either sit this year out and earn money and practice the UCAT to try to get into Nottingham next time around or just accept going to another Uni and preference the application for Universities which aren't UCAT-heavy.

Agreed! Transfers are a big no-no from what I've researched for medicine
