In terms of employability it doesn't matter where you study midwifery as all courses are held to the same standards by the NMC. To find the best uni for you, then you really do need to go to some open days. You are going to be spending three years of your life there so taking a day out now to determine if you like the uni and the city is time well spent. Some unis offer financial help to cover transport costs to open days, so contact a few and work out where to go.

If you can't do this, then plan a gap year to give yourself more time to choose the best uni for you. You would also be able to build up your public-facing volunteering/work experience in a gap year that will help your application for what is a competitive course.

Hi there,

It’s great that you’re thinking ahead about studying Midwifery. The most important thing is to make sure any Midwifery course you look at is accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) that means you’ll be eligible to register and work as a qualified midwife once you graduate.

If you’d like to see what we offer, here’s a link to our Midwifery BSc (Hons) course at LJMU:
https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduates/2026/36483-midwifery-bsc-hons

We understand that time and financial constraints can make open days difficult, so we’ve created LJMU On Demand, where you can explore recorded talks and taster sessions at your own pace just search Midwifery here: https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/on-demand/login

Here’s the Midwifery course induction video that gives lots of insight into the programme: https://www.youtube.com/embed/g4GyxnWPg6o

If you have any specific questions, feel free to email our team at [email protected] they’ll be happy to help.

Many universities also use Unibuddy, where you can chat with current students about university life. We’re still adding more students, but you can explore our page here:
https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/study/undergraduate-students/chat-to-a-student

It’s also worth getting some prospectuses from different universities most are digital now, so you can get them sent straight to your email. They’re a quick and easy way to compare courses and get a feel for each uni.

I’m also happy to chat about life at LJMU or in Liverpool in general.

Wishing you all the best as you make your university choices 🙂

Hi Alexis,

It’s completely normal to feel unsure about how to choose the right university, especially when you can’t easily attend open days. The good news is that there are still plenty of ways to make an informed decision, and you’re already taking the right first step by asking for advice.

If you’re thinking about becoming a midwife, London South Bank University (LSBU) is an excellent choice. LSBU offers the BSc (Hons) Midwifery (3-year) degree, which is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), meaning that when you graduate, you’ll be qualified to register and practise as a midwife in the UK. The course combines academic study with placements in hospitals, birthing centres and community settings across London, giving you real, hands-on experience supporting women and families through pregnancy, birth and beyond.

One of LSBU’s biggest strengths is its strong partnerships with NHS Trusts across London, including some of the city’s leading maternity hospitals. This ensures you gain a wide variety of clinical experience, supported by tutors and mentors who are practising midwives. LSBU also has an outstanding reputation for employability, with many graduates going straight into midwifery roles after completing their degree.

Even if you can’t visit in person, LSBU offers virtual tours, online open days and webinars, and you can also chat with current students through our Unibuddy platform. Many of our healthcare students are active there, so you can hear directly from people studying Midwifery and other related courses. These resources are all available on the LSBU website and are a great way to get a feel for the university without needing to travel.

When choosing a university, look for one that is NMC-accredited, offers a good balance of theory and placements, provides strong student support, and feels like a place where you can grow both personally and professionally. LSBU checks all those boxes, and being based in central London, you’ll have access to some of the UK’s best healthcare facilities and a diverse range of clinical experiences.

If you ever get the chance to visit in person, LSBU’s next Open Day is on Saturday 15th November, but until then, you can explore more online.
👉 You can sign up here: LSBU Open Day.
👉 You can also chat with our students through our Unibuddy platform: Chat with our students.

Whatever you decide, take your time to research, compare a few NMC-accredited universities, and choose the one that feels right for your goals and circumstances. LSBU would be delighted to support you on your journey to becoming a midwife.
