How did you chose what subject and qs to write your Extended Essay about?

im between many subjects and don’t know what do to. How did you guys narrow your choice down and chose a topic that was interesting to write about. At the end of the day i want the best extended essay grade, that’s what im trying to get. But how do i know what to write about and what made it easier for you guys choosing your qs.

I began by outlining topics I enjoyed the most and had some knowledge of before trying to find a question that connected to something contemporary or perhaps controversial, something I could argue. If your goal is a high mark, focus your topic on something that has a wealth of reliable sources and is clearly defined enough for some analysis. You can also take help from The Academic Papers UK which provides 24/7 support to the students. Don't pick something very broad or something so niche!

What did you write your EE about? Do you regret choosing that topic/ qs? Like i could do global politics or English lit n lang however im not that good at English. If i do lit n lang i think i would analyse relationship or theme in a movie, but im not sure. I need to speak to my teacher, i really have no idea what to do. Because i think math would suck and bio would be too hard ( originally i wanted to do bio, but im struggling with it already). So i have no idea.

What is something you would like to learn more about/explore in your classes? The goal of the EE is for you to go beyond the class curriculum and do self-guided research. It is better to connect it back to topic from the class but it's ok if you can't.

That's how I picked my topic (bio) I wanted to understand if animals could adapt to climate change. However, I was stuck narrowing it down because I was worried about limiting myself. So I went with my gut and what felt right and picked birds (falcons).

Pick what is interesting to you and make sure that there is enough research/sources to support it. For specifically picking subjects, what do you feel that you understand the best? If you like science do science. Make it easy for yourself. Don't worry about if it is original enough.

(Hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions!)

I did process of elimination for the subjects. I knew I didn't want to do a language one, and I listened to what the teachers suggested (most of my teachers actually actively discouraged people to do an EE in their subject, unless you're really interested.)

If you're looking for best scores, English is always the best subject to go for, it has the highest % of As usually. Maths is a hard one, it used to be really hard to score an A in, but now I think it is better. From the May 2025 stats, it seems like it is not very easy to get an A in (comparing with psychology and physics). I don't know about global politics.

I did a world studies EE, I don't really remember how I found my topic, but I think I just read some articles? And then combined them with issues that I found interesting outside studies. I imagine for English, people usually have a text/work in mind that they really enjoy and want to do a deep dive in.
