Oxford PhilAT

Hey yall I have my admissions test for philosophy and theology in two weeks time and I've only just started revising lol...
I originally was gonna do the essay question for the part b because I don't know all that much about logic, but after looking at the guidance it seems like it might be easier as long as I put some time into learning about logical fallacies etc? I don't really have much time so I want to try to be as secure as possible lol.
For anyone who's done it, did you learn formal logic for it? Or if you think the essay questions are easier, why? Whats the best way to approach them?
Of course the best thing for me to do is practice, but I find whenever I try I just look at the question and have a bunch of ideas that are so unsophisticated and not philosophical... I find it really hard not to apply my own knowledge about philosophers and to literally just argue stuff yourself.
If anyone has any advice then pleaseee let me know

I have done a decent amount of work on formal logic and linguistic philosophy, but mainly because this is the primary focus of philosophy degrees at Oxford (but I am applying for something different to you since I am doing Philosophy and Modern Languages).

Omg I didn't see this. I didn't think it went too bad but its literally impossible to tell. The questions were like honestly pretty different from a lot of the ones I'd seen in past papers. I actually ended up doing the logic question in the end but it wasn't really logic it was literally just like how are these words different lol which apparently is a style they've started to favour in recent years. I definitely went into it underprepared so there's that...

Ahhhh thats super handy!! I don't do philosophy A-level I do RS so we don't do much formal logic. Literally just what is a valid and sound argument and that's it. I only really do philosophy of religion and this is my main area of interest, so the test was pretty hard in that all the questions were on things completely unfamiliar to me.. Praying I get an interview though lol

tbf some of the questions on the 2025 PhilAT logic section were basically the exact same as the ones from previous years

I only managed to do decent stuff in the logic section because I did basically all the PPQs to prepare for it 😭😭😭

I should've focused on the languagey ones but I was basically just hoping and praying that it would be formal logic. I think I did one practice question for the language ones the night before so I kind of had an idea what to do, but I wasn't too sure what they were looking for. I focused on the essay questions when I did past papers because I thought they'd be easier, but I just remember looking at them in the exam and immediately being like there is NO way I'm doing that lol. Pretty sure I completely misunderstood the extract though smh... I literally can't use my brain under timed conditions. Oh well! What will be will be... Have you heard back about an interview yet???

No I've not heard back yet 😭😭😭
New College said on their acknowledgement email that they won't get back to us until December regarding interviews- seeing as though the philosophy and modern languages interviews are like 8th and 9th of Dec, I expect to know whether or not I have managed to get an interview by like the 1st/2nd Dec.
It might be worth practicing some PhilAT questions, especially the logic section, to prep for interview- what college are you applying to?

Omg that is horrific... I still haven't heard back either from Worcester and the interviews are on the 8th and 10th.. I was planning on not prepping until I hear back but I literally just have to start now! Yes I'll definitely do that!! I'm so nervous though like I did a practice interview with my teacher and I think it was an extract from Leibniz about the greatest possible worlds thing and the questions he was asking genuinely had me questioning whether I actually knew what the principle of sufficient reason WAS 😭 It was actually horror....
