Midwifery or radiotherapy

I absolutely hate physics and maths and radiotherapy has a lot of that and midwifery doesn’t but I don’t know what amm leaning towards the most I don’t want to go by my head only but I also what I want trulyyyy?? Pleaseee choose for midwifery or radiotherapy

Have you been to any open days and spoken to staff about the physics content in the radiotherapy course? My YP is doing radiotherapy and didn't take maths or physics at A level and has found the physics content to be manageable. It's not the most interesting part of the degree, but the physics is applied and the calculations they had to do in first year were fine. Have you also managed to do a day of shadowing in a cancer centre?

Hey! it's completely normal to feel torn between courses both midwifery and radiotherapy are rewarding careers but they focus on very different skills.

Radiotherapy:

Involves a lot of technical work including physics, maths and understanding radiation and imaging

you'll spend time planning treatments and working closely with machines as well as patients

suited to people who enjoy science, calculations, and technology as much as patient care.

Midwifery:

Focuses on supporting women and families through pregnancy, birth and postnatal care

Less heavy on physics and maths, more on practical skills, communication and hands-on care

requires emotional resilience, empathy and strong interpersonal skills.

Hi, I'm currently halfway through the first semester so I might be able to give you some ideas of what to expect. In the first semester we focus on fundamental maths and physics like inverse square law and calculating field size. We also cover x ray production and how x ray interacts with matter. We look at graphs to understand the factors that influence the quality and quantity of the x ray beam. Although it takes time to fully grasp the physics concepts you will find it easier once you understand the basics. Since the main goal is to apply what you learn clinically, don't worry if you don't understand everything in lectures as you will get a better understanding during clinical placements. Personally I find the anatomy and oncology content more demanding rather than the physics as there's so much to remember in a short time. If biology is your stronger suit you might find that part a bit easier.
I don’t know much about midwifery myself, but a friend who’s studying it told me that it’s a very full-on course. She has placement starting this month, so she’s been trying to complete all the theory work beforehand, which has been quite a lot.
