I need help with uni decisions please!!

Hey everyone. I sat A-levels maths, economics, physics and arabic this year and achieved AAAB respectively. I decided to go on a gap year to take a break from studies and rethink about my future. I will be reapplying soon for 2026 entry with my grades and I still dont know what degree to study. My choices would be QMUL, KCL, UCL and City st george. I would say my main wish right now is to study at KCL and UCL as they are more prestigious and I prefer their location and campus much more. However, I don’t know if I would be rejected instantly as most of their courses need at least one A*. I am stuck between choosing economics and engineering but I think the thing I want the most is to get into a good university. Is it still worth it to apply for their courses or are they just too competitive? I would appreciate any advice for my situation.

Decide what you want to study - and why - then work out which Unis/courses to apply to.

Hi there,

As above, course choice should come before uni choice!

If you wanted to study Econ or an Engineering-type course, then this is 100% realistic for you and there are plenty of unis who would happily make you an offer with those grades if you put in a solid personal statement. I would be careful to look at UCL and KCL's entry requirements however, because both of those unis are very competitive and so if your grades do not match their requirements then you may be less likely to get an offer.

There is no harm in applying to one or both of KCL and UCL though as one of them could be your aspirational choice, just make sure to apply for City St George's and a couple of others with required grades pitched at AAA/AAB where you'll be more likely to get an offer.

To help you decide what to study, perhaps go along to some of your uni's open days and listen to talks on Econ VS Engineering and see which you think you'd enjoy more. Both will be very respected and employable degrees to have which will open a lot of doors, but its worth hearing more about what the courses will entail. Also, have a think about what kind of career you see yourself enjoying in future - it sounds like you've already been doing this which is great to hear. Just be sure to pick a course with modules/contents you think you'll enjoy and be engaged with as this will make it more likely you'll do well!

Hoping this adds - best of luck 🙂
