Birmingham or Exeter

For economics… I am unable to attend their open days and I have to pick between them as I can’t apply to both.. does anybody have anything that won them over at one or the other. I can’t decide between the two courses so that factor is negligible

If the courses are really even, maybe look at location? They are both very different, so you'll probably be more inclined to one or the other. UCAS has some very helpful region/city guides, and pages dedicated to each uni featuring student comments and what's nearby. Definitely look into it, but obviously Birmingham is a big city, while Exeter is a bit more rural.
I've been to an open day at Exeter and thought it was lovely, but I can't speak about Birmingham sorry! Good luck with your decision

Exeter - the campus is beautiful

Birmingham - ditto - Campus Tour | University of Birmingham -and the city is a great deal more interesting than Exeter.

PS. Does either course offer you any opportunity for a work-placement or study abroad? Either adds enormously to your graduate CV.

Hi Stressedrabbit,

I can totally understand how not being able to attend open days can make choosing between unis hard. I've spent the last four years studying at Exeter, so hopefully you'll find it helpful to hear what I liked and was surprised by.

My personal favourite things about Exeter as a university are that it is a campus university with everything you need in one place. On Streatham campus (where economics is taught), they have everything you could need on site: your accommodation, classes, a nightclub, a pub, shops, cafes, a cinema, and study spaces. This was the best in the first year when I was still getting to know the city, and most people lived close by on campus. The city itself is super walkable, which I loved as everything was so close by and I didn't need a car or really to rely on public transport too much. Exeter is a massive student city, so there's always lots going on in the city and at the university to get involved in. Another great thing I loved about Exeter was the number of societies and sports clubs on offer; there are over 100 societies, so there really is something for everyone.

Something I was surprised by when I went to Exeter was how close the beach and Dartmoor (The national park) are to the City. On the train, you can be at either in 20 minutes, which I really valued later on into my studies when I wanted to explore the south west a bit more, especially during the summer. In general, one of the best things about Exeter is the student community and the geographical location of the university to the city centre. These things combined make you feel like you're living in a city but have a safe hub with every amenity on hand.

Good luck,
