rent contract when transferring

hi all,

im currently 3 weeks into my first term at Uni A and have paid my first semesters rent instalment which was around 2k 2 weeks ago. Im now trying to transfer to another university as I dislike the course, but my accomodation here is under a private provider who are telling me I have to find a replacement tenant or I will still be liable for the rent which is understandable. I have two questions:

1. If i do find a replacement tenant, are they now liable for the term 1 rent in which case I would be refunded for the remainder of the term as Im not staying there anymore. Or do I not get the money back and the new tenant just gets the first term free?

2. If i dont get the money back, how am I supposed to find another 2k to pay for a new flat at the uni i wish to transfer to?

Any help would be very much appreciated thank you!!

With private or uni accommodation you are liable for the fees for the rest of the contract unless you can find a replacement tenant (do read the contract you signed when you accepted your accommodation offer). If you do find someone to replace you, you need to check with your landlord if you can arrange for the new tenant to pay you for the remaining weeks of this term, or if the landlord will refund you the outstanding weeks once the new tenant signs up. Again, this might be covered in your contract.

Your second question - is a transfer likely or even possible? Have you contacted the new uni and asked if there are spaces on the course and if you can start late? You might need to consider sticking with the course you're on this year and reapplying for 2026 entry.

Hi, I've had a transfer approved through clearing from the new uni so my place is guaranteed as soon as I get released from my course at my current uni.

Have you checked with your current uni what your tuition fee liability is for the weeks you have spent there? Are they going to waive it or take the first instalment of 25%?
