what to do for halloween at uni if i dont have any friends yet?

Hiii so im a second yr and surrey and Halloween is coming and i rllyyy wanna do something like have a night out this yr. im in my second yr and im staying in a uni house though im not super close with my housemates and they dont seem to rlly go out so i havent rlly had the opportunity to have nights out cos i still havent rlly made any real friends yet which means i probably wont get invited to parties or anything T-T i still dont wanna sit in my room on halloween though im already bummed about how bleak my social life has been these past couple months i only occasionally go out to see friends in london but i havent made any real connections at my uni yet and halloween is approaching...
i dont think going to clubs/bars alone is gonna be fun at all so im rlly stuck... is it common for societies to host things or am i cooked? worst case scenario i can try to see if i can tag along with friends at london but i'd rather not have to worry about travel...
(if ur a also student at surrey also looking for friends lmk it would be great to have someone to hang out with... T-T)

Hi @Anonymous 👋

It is very common for the university to be hosting things for halloween as well as societies doing something too! At Essex, we have plenty of events we indulge in! Halloween movies will be played at our on campus cinema, halloween gala will sometimes be held, fun halloween themed parties and clubbing events and societies host games and so as well.

Keep an eye out for events and you will be fine! Societies do halloween themed events so you could join them 🙂

Hi,

I hope you are well! Sorry to hear about the situation that you are in, making friends can be tough and takes some people longer than others but that is not an issue at all! Have you joined any societies or clubs that the uni offers? They are an amazing way to meet new people especially people with a common interest! Attending societies/clubs regularly will mean that you see the same people each week and as you start to get to know them more, the opportunity to do stuff with them outside of the society/club will arise.

I think it is common for societies to host special nights for certain events such as halloween. I know the football team I am part of are hosting a halloween themed social where we will all get together and then go out so yes you can expect lots of societies to host things like this!

Have you asked your housemates if they have any plans for halloween? You might be able to persuade them to go out with you for the night and that would also be an opportunity to bond with them! Keep going with making friends though, it is never too late and there will always be opportunities for you to meet new people! I know it seems bleak as you have mentioned but the right people for you will come!

Let me know if you have any other questions, I am more than happy to help!

Thanks, Matt 🙂

Hi there,

I am sorry to hear that you have found it tricky to make friends at uni. It can be quite hard and I know how you feel so I just wanted to reply to this to give you a bit of reassurance.

I would agree with what others here have said - have you joined any societies? These often have great socials and I'm sure there would be a Halloween themed one at least or some sort of event. If you can, have a look and see if there are any that you like and if you still have time to join them as these are great, and not just for Halloween!

You could also see if there are any events that your uni is putting on too as they often put things on that you can go to where you can do something fun and also meet some new people at your uni! It is worth having a look as there might be something that you enjoy!

Another thing is look on social media as there will often be Facebook groups for your uni and you can often find people on here! It is worth having a look as you might find some people on here who are going out or who you can just start chatting to in general.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador 🙂

Hiya,

You may want to check if your student union is hosting or selling tickets for any festive events on that day (eg. haunted house...) 🙂 Some clubs and societies may host events as well and it's a great opportunity to meet new people as well 🤗 I hope this helps.
