Realised I’m technically only studying 2 a levels

Hi all, the title is basically my situation.

I study A level law and psychology and WJEC level 3 criminology. I just found out that universities won’t count criminology as an a
level despite it being equivalent to one.

Im sort of confused and stressed

Surprised my career guide teachers never mentioned it to me or to anyone at all.

I’d like some insight into universities which would accept my subjects- I’m wanting to study criminology at university.
Thank you

Have you reached out to the universities you are interested in studying at to discuss further?

It is only 'equivalent' to an A level in terms of the number of study hours - schools are misleading many students about the value of this sort of qualification compared to A levels.

Competitive Unis, those asking for A grades, may have an issue with this diploma - its not considered as 'academically rigorous' as an A level by those Unis. However, 'lower' Unis will probably be okay with it. They may state this on their website - if not, just email or phone them and ask, they won't mind.

I have only recently sent emails to a handful of universities who offer criminology courses align with my predicted grades. However I’m still waiting for a response back from the majority of them.

Hi,
I nearly took level 3 wjec crim but didn’t in the end as it wasn’t for me. When I was researching different universities they usually cover if they accept it. Manchester do but you must have two other A-levels on their list, and I believe Kings have a similar thing. Another thing as your wjec is that you will not be able to use both welsh bacc and criminology as they count as diplomas

Hi there,

At LJMU, we offer a BA (Hons) Criminology course!

Our entry requirements are usually BBC, but we only require a minimum of 2 A-levels and also accept other qualifications, so potentially the L3 course in criminology you're currently taking!

Here is the link to the course page:
https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduates/2026/31520-criminology-ba-hons

See what our students think about studying criminology with us:

We also offer joint courses, such as 'Criminology and Psychology' or 'Criminology and Sociology' if those are of any interest, as well as a 'Criminal Justice' course too

I would take a look at the links and options above, and if that sounds like a bit of you then to contact our admissions team, mentioning what you are studying, and they will be able to give you more information about entry requirements, especially with your WJEC L3. If you have any questions about the course(s), then feel free to contact our course enquiries team with any questions!!

Hope this helps!
