A level subject combination help please

I originally planned to choose Art, Psychology, and Music for my A levels, but due to the subject block arrangements, I’m unable to take that combination.

At the moment, I’m still exploring career options, but I’m particularly interested in:

Art Therapy (which requires a master’s degree)

Spatial or Interior Architecture

I now have the following options to choose from, all of which I enjoy and feel confident in:

Art, Chemistry, and Psychology

Art, Music, and an EPQ (based on a psychology-related project the Music course at my school is worth one and a half A levels)

Art, Music, and an EPQ (based on a psychology-related project)

Art, Psychology, and Graphics

I’m confident I will achieve strong grades in Art and Music. I also enjoy Chemistry and currently perform well in it. Although I haven’t studied Psychology before, my teacher has recommended it as a good subject to pair with Art.

I think Graphics will be too time consuming just like Art, im not sure

I would really appreciate your advice on which A level combination would be best suited based on everything I’ve mentioned.

Its worth thinking about a 1-year Foundation in Art and Design course between school and Uni. This would give you exposure to many different art forms, and give you the best facilities, resources, staff expertise for taking your career further - its a very common route for those interested in any form of creative art/design, and is never a waste of time. Courses are available at most local colleges and at some Universities. Examples :
UAL Level 3 Applied General Diploma / Extended Diploma in Art and Design (U3DA1F) | Uxbridge College
Art & Design Course - UAL Foundation… | Arts University Plymouth
UAL Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Art and Design Manchester School of Art
etc etc

Hi there,

Based on a quick search of interior design/interior architecture courses, there are many that do not ask for specific subject combinations, and this is true of several other arts based courses too, if you wanted to go straight into Undergraduate study.

However, if you are not 100% certain of which discipline to choose from yet, a Foundation Art and Design course is actually a very good shout. Whilst unfortunately Bath do not offer it (so I can't comment on which uni would be best for it - this is entirely your choice!), what it does is introduce you to a variety of art disciplines (painting, charcoals, interior design, graphic design, fashion/textiles, communications design, 3D design etc), allowing you to work out which discipline you enjoy and are best at, supporting you into Undergraduate study.

If you wanted to do art therapy eventually, then doing both art and some form of psychology/a psychology EPQ is a good idea. Music is also a good call if it is something you enjoy and are confident with. What you might find helpful if you haven't already seen it is this page on the art therapy route, which lists the 11 approved unis that offer the masters course so you can take a look at their entry requirements. Something also to think about is trying to secure some kind of volunteering/work experience in a helping/arts and health/special education environment. Whilst this may not be essential, it will defo help towards any applications/interviews to talk about!

Hoping this adds and best of luck with your next steps
