The only real prestigious universities in the UK are Oxbridge, LSE, Imperial, UCL and Warwick. Period. At least, from an international perspective.

I'd take away Warwick and replace it with St. Andrews and Edinburgh.

No, i'm afraid.

And I'm afraid that's your opinion.

However, if you asked most people which is a more prestigous university out of St. Andrews and Warwick, 9/10 people would choose St. Andrews.

In Scotland, I'd certainly say so, however it's a totally different case in England. St Andrews has been graced by the presence of Prince William, though this is starting to fade.

In Scotland, perhaps. But it has a mediocre population - hence unreliable when discussing international reputation. Prestige, on a global scale, places Warwick miles ahead of St. Andrews. St.Andrews and Edinburgh are virtually unheard of in Hong Kong, where I reside. Pretty much just Oxbridge, LSE, UCL, Imperial and Warwick. And a greater bunch of American colleges - Harvard, Yale, Stanford, MiT, UPenn etc.

You should really consult Iligan on this matter. Afterall, he has spoken to numerous employers from various countries. St. Andrews and Edinburgh, in the UK, are great. But internationally.. they really are an unknown quantity to many, especially outside the EU, with the the exception of mega employers.
.ACS.

Wow.

I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

Exactly. Big deal.

Graced by a drunk, and a lazy one at that, who just so happened to get his Pilot Wings after 13 weeks (impossible to do it that time stated an expert) "in" in the RAF, whilst ordinary mortals have to slog through 77 weeks...

Oh really? Maybe I'm totally wrong about languages then. I don't think I've ever met a student of French here.

I don't think you are wrong about languages then.

The likely reasons why you have probably not met a student of French or any other lingo are because:-

- The department is so small it barely exists. The student body is so low that you have to look hard to find them.
- Most of the language students tend to have the most nondescript personalities and the place reeks of rejects. You'd only study lingos here if your A-levels were not quite good enough for any of the Russell Group lot. So like I say, rejects.

Woooh, hold up there, get off your high horse. I study languages here and I love it. Alright it may not be one of the best departments and yes it is quite small but it definately isn't a place for rejects and I don't think you have any right to say that. Learning a language is probably harder than any other department in the uni and I think you'll find that most of us have come out of A-Levels with AAB/AAC!! Don't judge when you clearly don't know anything about it!!

I wasted..... sorry spent time studying Mod Langs there, so I can say that alrite! And I got accepted with a CDD! (Despite falling spectacularly from AAB at AS-level but that's another story)

I was reading a thread on college confidential (the US version of TSR) the other day, and all the people on there seemed obsessed by St Andrews, and considered it by far the best in the UK after Oxbridge and the London Universities

I'm in my 2nd year at leicester now and i still cant fault it! Good teaching, good sports teams and societies, decent night life etc. I needed ABB to do my course so its not like you can just walk into this uni it actually requires a bit of intelligence and hard work to do so. I do geography (make your jokes) and one of my lecturers in the first year was one of the authors of an A-level text book i used (i think it was for OCR).

I think one of the best things about the uni is that it has relatively large (and well established) department areas, some unis dont have large departments for certain courses which can limit their available facilities as many subjects are not purely based in lecture theatres.
I'll have to use geography as an example cause its what i know best; i looked at a few different unis when i was searching and found that some places that offered my course, didnt have an entire department dedicated to it, it was more like a few classrooms and lecture theatres in the back of some random building. Obviously im not saying leicester has a building for every subject and course but i feel it has a good wide range of facilities that can satisfy the majority.

In terms of prestigiousness, its not like a cambridge or oxford but what is? Leicester's motto is something like 'elite, not elitist', so you are at a very good university but you are with a very level-headed and like minded group of people who enjoy their respective subject area and have a good knowledge about it too, as well as wanting to go out with friends and have a good time.

So is Leicester good? Yes
Is it prestigious? Im going to say No

But hey, who wants to be at a super prestigious place anyway? most of the time it just goes straight to the students heads.
No! is the simple answer. It's certainly NOT a Prestigious university, and NOT part of the Russell Group neither. It could be considered a Red Brick University, but I don't believe it considers itself that. It's definitely better than an ex-polytechnic, but nothing to brag about. I would much prefer, if you can get in, going to the Universities of York, Exeter, Warwick, Bristol, or even Reading for that matter. It's definitely not good for Economics or if you plan to remain with your first degree for employment, where a Masters from elsewhere would be recommended as a top up. I'd go there as a stepping-stone only.

just wondering cos i'm considering going there

DMU is the complete opposite of prestigious, I have been turned down from approximately 3000 or so jobs on the notion I have graduated from there.
