5 ways our lecturers actually get neurodiverse students (because some of them are too

If starting University didn’t already feel like a lot, being neurodiverse can make it all feel extra overwhelming. Here’s how our lecturers and support teams really understand neurodiverse students (hint: some of them have been in your shoes too!).

1. We treat you as an individual, not just a diagnosis

Our Student Inclusion Team puts it best. They "treat you as an individual, not as a diagnosis." You’re seen and heard, there’s a genuine understanding and personalised care.

2.Tailored Student Inclusion Plans (SIPs)

You’ll get a Student Inclusion Plan (SIP) tailored to you and every student’s needs are addressed uniquely. It’s all about making adjustments to reduce barriers in your studies so you can focus on smashing your goals.

3. People and equipment

Support isn’t just about policies, we’re talking support workers and specialist equipment, plus help with applying for funding for assistive tech or software.

4. Sunflower Lanyard Scheme

Not every disability is visible. That’s why the university supports the Sunflower Lanyard, a subtle symbol that someone may have an invisible disability and might need extra help.

5. Support that follows you around (in a good way!)

From lecturers to university support services, everyone’s looped in thanks to our close working relationship and connected systems. The support moves with you through your academic journey.

What kind of support is offered to neurodivergent students?

Hi @flowersinmyhair, you can find all the support we offer on our website here. Keep an eye on our TikTok too because we’re doing a series with our Student Content Creators including uni tips for anyone neurodivergent and the specific support we offer at University of Staffordshire. We've also got several upcoming Open Days which are the perfect opportunity to ask us questions about the support available and how we’ll help you get the most out of student life.

The University of Staffordshire has been extremely supportive of my neurodivergence since I joined back in 2022. Reasonable adjustments are always there if you need them and lecturers are more than supportive of both your conditions and learning styles. One instance I've had is a lecturer tailoring their teaching style to fit my needs through a quick convo with them. This included recording lectures with captions for those hard of hearing or eyesight, creating live meetings via Teams to follow along with and adjusting guidance for assignments for clarity. Would love to hear from other reps what inclusive practices they have seen in their courses.

Aura,
Uni Of Staffs Rep (Computer Science).
