IBMS Registration Portfolio

I am about to start my IBMS registration portfolio but I am really confused with collecting evidence and how to actually begin etc. I am trying to complete it whilst working full-time as an AP so it is very difficult having to do everything in my own time. My training officer is not very co-operative and seems to prioritise students over staff members. Any help/advice would be much appreciated thanks!

Hi, trainee BMS here.

I would suggest if possible, asking the people already doing it at your hospital about how they’re tackling it. I’ve been relatively lucky with mine because at my hospital, it provides a template with questions to answer as well as telling you what standards are to be included in your answers.

If your hospital does not have a template, perhaps if you’re SUPER lucky, you could ask to borrow a copy of someone’s portfolio (have them email it to you) and use that as inspiration. Me and my mate were doing ours back to back and he was signed off as a BMS the other month. 🙂

Good luck!

this is normal, especially if you are an AP

your department would rather you stay as an AP for as long as possible. Once registered you will be looking for a BMS job within the department or leaving. Students are supernumerary and the university typically gives some kind of payment to the training lab. Here the incentive structure is to get placement students in/out ASAP, keep department trainees around for as long as possible - I think the upper limit is 2 years, I might be wrong.

I was finally allowed to do training portfolio after what was a very frustrating wait. Bear in mind, I was doing real analytical work from day 1. I started as MLA in December 2011, was finally allowed to start the portfolio in mid 2017 and HCPC registered in May 2019. We moved building and training officer left, so that added to the delay.

The content of each piece of evidence is not groundbreaking or scientific. The mystique of the portfolio is purely a function of how illusive it is. Its mostly common sense stuff and documenting the self-evident. Do not feel the need to pack several lever arch files with extra evidence, it makes the assessors life more difficult.

I used resources from this guy http://www.mankybadger.co.uk/portfolio/ - its mostly examples of set questions and witness statements. Do bear in mind this is quite dated and the numbering scheme is from the old standards and references Data Protection Act, not GDPR.

You might be able to recycle a university essay. Audit/ test validation or verification is very much expected. If you have not participated in something like that, volunteer ASAP. Likewise some kind of quality assurance.
Does not have to be anything groundbreaking, some kind of data driven task to improve efficiency - drop ESR in favour of CRP, drop rheumatoid factor in favour of anti CCP
