Choosing outdoor biology uni courses

I'm hoping to study ecology or environmental science, ideally practical and hands-on, near Winchester or Hampshire. I have 131 UCAS points from an Access to HE Diploma. Any feedback on these or similar courses, or what kind of careers people got into? 😊

I'm currently studying Ecology and Conservation at UEA, which I know does not fall into your region of choice, but does fit the bill in terms of the other things you are looking for! I am biased, but I would recommend it- I chose the course at UEA because it has a really strong focus on practical learning- you have weekly field trips in first year, options to do field trips abroad in subsequent years, and a fab campus with lots of wildlife! So it might be something to look into, even just as a back-up option! The course does accept the Access to HE Diploma- have a look at the linked website for the details on how many credits in which subjects you will need.

In terms of ecology vs environmental science, ecology focuses more on the biology side of things, whereas environmental science is more similar to physical geography, but there is a cross-over with both! At UEA at least, with either course you can take some of the same modules, it just depends what you find most interesting!

I can't provide you with much information on careers since I haven't finished my degree yet, but the website (above) has a section on employability that lists some of the careers graduates of the course have gone into, so you can get an idea of where the degree might lead you!

Have you considered environmental science at Southampton? They consider students with Access to HE on a case-by-case basis so it's worth giving them a call.
