There is not much between them - they are both excellent Engineering Unis Brookes big plus is its focus on Automotive and Motorsport - its probably the top UK Uni for this - so if you have any interested in this area, it would probably be a slightly better choice. Have you been to a Uni Open Day at either?

Yeah I went to both open days and I liked them both so I don’t have a preference on that. But I’m not sure if I want a job in the motorsport or automotive industry and I’m just generally unsure of what job I want to do in engineering. I just wanted to know which uni is better overall for engineering like which one has better teaching?

Hi,

I hope you’re well! Oxford Brookes is a very strong choice for Mechanical Engineering, especially if you care about teaching quality, hands-on facilities, and employability. For the course I did (Biological Sciences), the teaching quality was excellent. This is supported by Brookes ranking highly (6th) for teaching. For a comparison to Brunel, Oxford Brookes scores higher on the Guardian subject table (Brookes has a higher overall subject score, career after 15 months, and higher student teaching satisfaction in the published table).

Something to note is that Oxford Brookes recently completed a major campus transformation at the Headington Hill site, with the 2025-2026 being the first academic year using the brand-new Teaching and Workshop buildings. These new facilities include industry-standard workshops, an autodynamics workshop, a wind tunnel and automotive labs, a VR/immersion lab, robotics labs, a digital theatre and modern social learning spaces - in short, top-notch practical facilities you’ll actually use on the Mechanical Engineering course. The buildings formally opened in May 2025, which is towards the end of the academic year. This means the new buildings did not contribute to the Guardian subject table rankings because the student data used would not include students who had extensively used the new facilities.

To summarise, Oxford Brookes has a good reputation for teaching quality and is well-regarded in the Guardian subject table. Specifically for Mechanical Engineering, this is achieved without taking the new facilities into account, so future students will likely rank the course higher.

I hope this is helpful,
Dan
