What should I do for 4th year housing

Next year is my 4th year at uni. Good first year but didn’t like flatmates. Terrible second year and grew to truly resent my housemates who excluded me. Didn’t help due to academic issues and also terrible house over an hours walk from campus. Now in third year I have a car, have made a few new friends through work and live in a much nicer house much closer to campus. Housemates are ok but we don’t really talk that much other than saying hello as the group that does stuff in the house I have little in common with. I’m doing my PGCE next year and need to consider what to do about housing then. I don’t really want to stay a where I am because it would be second years (and some third years) with me being a 4th year which would make me feel a bit out of place. What’s my best option for next year; asking loose acquaintances of their plans? Going on Facebook for housemates, finding a 21+ individual house share or private halls. I can’t live on campus as I need parking. Advice?

Hey @CocaColaTshirt,

I would recommend asking your current coursemates about their plans for next year; if any of them are considering studying a Master's or postgrad course, they may be happy to arrange a houseshare with you. You could also consider reaching out to your university's accommodation team for advice.

It may be worthwile considering private halls if they're within your budget; around now (late October/early November) is a good time to start sending enquiries to private accommodation providers about cost/possible availability.

Hope this helps and best of luck in your housing search!

Hi there,

Studios can be really expensive depending on where you are at uni, so I would first look and see if private studio's are in budget or not as they would be the best option. If that's totally out the question, then I'd look at post-graduate only flats in the area.

Most uni halls offer PG flats, as they tend to have longer tenancies due to having to be in uni over the summer. I know you said you can't go to uni halls because you need parking - I'm not sure where you're at uni but most places will have a dedicated few halls with parking availability at an extra cost, so I'd check if that is also an option.

For private accommodation, I believe you can still request to be put with postgraduate students, as they also tend to have different tenancy options for UG vs PG students.

I would start looking now, and write a list of pros and cons for each place, as well as prices, locations and accessibility to town/uni. As you will likely be applying as a single individual, it should be easier to find somewhere later on in the year, compared to groups of people looking to book out a whole apartment/house, so I wouldn't worry too much about running out of time. However, the sooner you start looking, the longer you have to think about it and decide.

Personally, when I was looking at accommodation to start my PG course, I just went and booked the cheapest halls that my uni offered, because I knew I wasn't going to be at home much compared to the amount of time I would spend on campus - I figured I'd only be at home in the evenings so it didn't bother me too much. My flatmates are all UG students but we honestly just keep to ourselves most of the time so there hasn't been any problems!

Hope this helps a little? Good luck!

Hi @CocaColaTshirt 👋

I would recommend asking your current coursemates of their plans since they may be in the same position as you. You could have a couple of you get a off campus house together or halls if you wish. Off campus may be a better option though considering you need parking and dont have it on campus. Checking on Facebook for people who need housemates is useful as well.
