Uni academic advisor

Very late to say but a couple of hours ago, I got told that theres a meeting with my academic advisor meeting tomorrow. Theres going be like be 30 people there.

How useful are those meetings? I've done a foundation year so i'm familiar with alot of things to do with university so a large part of me doesnt want to go because it might be a massive waste of time. My friend is going so she can always tell me what happens.

But what sort of stuff do they usually say?

30 people? That's a lot of people for an academic advisor meeting! We were like 5 people for mine.

Anyways, they're not terribly useful meetings to be perfectly honest, particularly if you've already been at uni for a year beforehand, but it's good to show up anyway to make yourself known. I recently had to request a reference from my academic advisor and he said that he was extremely happy to, because I am the only one of his advisees he deels he knows, as I was the only one that that consistently showed up and engaged with his meetings. Something worth considering.

Hi!

I know you will have had this by now, so I am sure you have decided whether it was useful or not, but I just thought I would add a couple of things to do with academic advisor meetings in general.

I think that they are more useful to me when there is a small group of people so that you have time to ask all of your questions, but it can still be useful in a bigger group if you have more general questions that you think others would ask or want to know too. However, if you want to ask specific questions about your work, I would say that asking to do a one on one meeting or even a smaller group meeting might be more beneficial.

I would engage with your academic advisor at least a bit though, as like Scotland Yard said they can be good for doing references which is very helpful to have!

I hope this helps,

Late in the semester by now for such large group meets. We do large group sessions in Welcome week and now I'm in the process of getting through 280ish individual meetings before the Xmas break.

Best to go, so your academic advisor knows who you are. Avoiding it could land you in a future problem.

Hiya,
I think it's important to show you face even if you think these meetings are not productive. It's good to get to know your academic advisor a little better as you never know when you might need their assistance in the future 🙂
