Want to become a nurse? Stand out when applying for Nursing at uni

Hey nurses of the future 👋

If you’re applying to study Nursing at university, whether Adult, Child or Mental Health, here are some top tips from our student nurses and lecturers at University of Staffordshire to help you prepare and stand out. We shared some tips to get you started earlier this year, but let's take a deep dive below.

1. Give yourself a good head start

Before you even start your nursing degree, it helps to do a bit of prep.
Look into:

The NMC Code (Nursing and Midwifery Council) this sets the standards all nurses must follow.

Professional values like compassion, teamwork, and respect.

Basic anatomy and physiology you don’t need to know everything, but having some background knowledge helps when you begin your training.

2. Get some experience

Experience isn’t just about hospital placements. There are lots of ways to show your passion for nursing:

Volunteering in healthcare settings or community projects.

Working through a nursing agency or as a care assistant.

Supporting a loved one or speaking with a nurse about their role.

These experiences will help you decide if nursing is truly for you, and give you plenty to talk about in your UCAS personal statement or interview.

3. Do your research on the profession

Ask yourself: What are employers looking for in a nurse today?

Check NHS Trust websites, healthcare job boards, and nursing forums to see what skills and attributes are in demand.

Being aware of current healthcare challenges, technology, and patient care trends will make you a more informed applicant.

4. Explore your options

Not all nursing courses or placements are the same!

Visit Open Days to see facilities like simulation labs, skills suites, and placement partnerships.

Ask about support, travel, and placement locations.

Look at different nursing specialisms to find the right fit for you.

Prepare yourself well but remember to take care of yourself too. Self-care is a vital part of being a good nurse.

5. Be yourself

When applying or attending interviews, be honest and reflective.
Ask questions, share your motivations, and be authentic.

Nursing is all about people. Showing your genuine passion will always make you stand out.
