Medical and Nursing Electives Abroad

Hey everyone,

I’m really interested in hearing what matters most to students when choosing an overseas elective things like location, supervision, clinical exposure, safety, or cost.

If you’ve already done an elective abroad (or are planning one), what’s been the hardest part of arranging it? Are there destinations or organisations you’d recommend or avoid?

I’m collecting insights to understand what students actually value most, so any honest feedback would be super helpful!

Thanks!

Hey @1EmiliaLondon

I did an overseas elective medical in Sri Lanka with Plan My Gap Year. The main thing that drew me to this was the location, as i had always wanted to visit Sri Lanka.

However, i did also enjoy the medical elective, in my case however, this was completely observational. We were able to pick a specialty of our choosing on the day and shadow a doctor. It definitely gave me a better insight into the healthcare system over there. Some of the doctors were very passionate about teaching you, and would show me the X-rays, ECGS, and explain the patient presentations. We were only on the elective for a few hours of the day, and the rest of the day we could either spend exploring the local area or joining in with one of the activities the coordinators had put on.

Let me know if you have any other questions 🙂
