cambridge written work

hi,

im applying for a college that requires written work, my teacher has said that i should use two pieces that i wrote at the end of y12

i'm not sure if that is too long ago as they said recent work, as these were completed around may-july of 2025, and the submission is around october/november? but my teacher said that these pieces are my best work, as we haven't really done anything substantial yet this year in y13

moreover, one of the pieces is coursework that i completed over like a month, and i'm not sure what to put for 'how long did you spend on this' because like it was done incrementally across quite a long period

any advice would be great, thanks

Hi, what are the requirements for the written work? Does it have to be something you have done in school or something related to the subject you are applying to?

Hi! For my Cambridge written work I’m going to use my end of yr 12 mock exam essays because those are my best essays that have been marked and so far in yr 13 I have not done any suitable essays for submission!

it depends what you’re applying for, i’m applying for law so the written work doesn’t need to be related, i’m using english essays

i think it needs to be marked by a teacher with their comments on it, but probably if you’ve done something outside of school you can just give it to your teacher to mark, but i think most people just use a piece of schoolwork that has already been marked

If it can be from outside, that's brilliant. I would suggest making an article of some sort on a legal issue or topic that genuinely interests you to show your passion for the subject. It doesn't have to be too long, probably like a page to a page and a half, discussing both sides and making sure your opinion is given. When I went to the open day, they had a lecture about how to apply to law, and one of the things they spoke about was how the majority of candidates discuss what parts of the law they like and why overall the law is good, but they don't give their opinion. They want students who are willing to challenge the law with their own beliefs and be able to back them up. If you're able to before the deadline, create one, potentially get a teacher to check it over as well, then I think they would be impressed, and you would be unique in that regard.

Hope this helps

It’s not uncommon at all to find yourself in this position as an Oxbridge applicant who is in the early stages of the current school year. You should follow your teacher's advice and submit those pieces of work, they will be assessed in line with the academic objectives set and in the context of the stage you were at when the work was completed. Your teacher will also be able to advise on how you respond to the question of how long was spent on the work.

No I don’t think they hate it, they just want something recent so I assume they don’t want something from years ago, I think y12 is fine, I’ve submitted mine and I used the ones I mentioned from y12, it’s better to have smth older if it’s stronger

I think they said it shouldn’t be written especially for Cambridge
