Surrey maths school

Hi, I'm currently in Y11 and thinking of applying so I'm interested on any information about the school and student life.

Hey. Sorry for the late reply. I'm a current Year 12 at Surrey Maths School, and I'm being 100% honest, it is a brilliant school. The pacing is quick, but the teachers help you every step of the way. The school is incredibly lenient in food and uniform (I wore sweatpants the whole of last week).
Everyone is really kind and uplifting, and I promise that you will make friends here. Everyone is here for the same reason and they like very similar things, so it's a very close-knit community.
It does start at 9:25 (1 hour later than most schools), so that's a plus if you live close; you can get more sleep. Or if you live further away, you don't have to wake up at 5.
Take it from me, it will be the best way forward if you like maths, sciences, and whatnot. Anything else?

Thanks for the reply.
What is the aptitude test like and do the predicted grades on the application matter a lot?

The aptitude test is just mostly UKMT questions. There really isn't a difference. And most of them shouldn't be that hard because more than anything, they're testing logic. I didn't answer all of my attitude test questions because they don't expect you to. My main bit of advice is to go on the SuMS website and go to the aptitude test section and try to complete the practice version and see how you get on. Don't worry too much about it, it just tests you on maths you already know and what you can apply to what situations. For predicted grades, generally not really. SuMS doesn't care that much about GCSEs, except for maths (they want an 8) and any other offered subject (normally a 7). Apart from that, if you're getting 5s or 6s in your GCSEs, it shouldn't really impact your application process. Hope this helps.

When do you find out if you got through to the next stage?

I found out around a few weeks after the interviews. Expect a reply early March, and don't worry. It's not Oxford, if you have a good attitude to Maths, then you would fit right in and there would be no reason to not accept you.

Yeah I did, it was kinda hard and I didn't do some questions like the last ones so I probably didn't do very well :frown:

Look, as I said, they don't care about you finishing the exam. All they want is to see how you apply your maths knowledge to the questions. Trust me, it'll be fine. I hope to see you soon.

Hello, I am a current Year 13 at the school. There will be a pastoral and maths interview, the pastoral one is basically your ambitions, getting to know you and the maths one would just be them teaching you a concept and seeing how quickly you are able to apply it (at least that's how it was for me). I would say as long as you are passionate about coming here and are keen to do maths, it will show regardless of whether you have prepared or not. Good luck.
