UCAS help for economics courses

Is it wayyy too risky to apply to these for bsc economics
My predicted grades are AAB
Durham - ABB
Bristol - AAB
Exeter - AAB/ABB
Sheffield - ABB
Liverpool - ABB

(I’m contextual btw) the grades listed are the grades of the offer that would be made, do you think I have any chance of getting the offers. I woudl apply to a uni that is BBB but I can’t find any. Please share some advice

Honestly if you can’t find any lower grades (I’m in the same boat for law), just go for those. Theres a reason you’ve been given those predicted grades, so if your tutors think you can do it, you should think that too!

Hi there! 😊

Your predicted grades of AAB are really strong, especially if you’re also eligible for contextual consideration that can definitely work in your favour! The universities you’ve listed (Durham, Bristol, Exeter, Sheffield, and Liverpool) are competitive, but your predictions put you within or above most of their standard entry requirements, so you absolutely have a chance of receiving offers.

That said, it’s always a good idea to include a “safety choice” entry requirements (around BBB or BBC) to make sure you’ve got a balanced UCAS application. Even if you’re struggling to find one you like, it’s worth exploring universities that look at your personal statement, contextual background, and subject interest holistically rather than just grades.

For example, De Montfort University (DMU) offers a BSc Economics course with typical entry requirements of BBC–BBB, and we take a contextual approach to applications too. The course combines economic theory with practical skills and real-world case studies, plus there are opportunities for placements and study abroad.

If you’d like to know more about how we assess applications or what makes a strong personal statement for Economics, we’d be happy to help!

Best of luck,
Elmehdi, DMU Representative

It might be worth having at least one non-RG choice simply because they are not as competitive in terms of application numbers / pressure for places, and are therefore more likely to accept 'below grades' on Results Day - Sussex as one example Economics (with a professional placement year) BA : University of Sussex or UEA as another BSc (Hons) Economics with a Placement Year 2026/27 | UEA - both good for Economics.

Can I ascertain what research you have undertaken into BSc Economics as this is probably way more important than worrying about grades. Most of the courses that you have listed will be mathematcis intensive and unless you have strong mathematical skills you may struggle to achieve even if you get admitted. As you dont mention your A Level studies you may wish to consider your fit for this pathway as it will feel very different to any A Level Economics (assuming that you may be studying for this).

I fully agree with this! Although I’m currently not taking alevel economics, I am infact taking alevel maths and this is a large reason of why I want to do economics as it is maths heavy! I have really done a lot of research onto this course, and I have ruled out a lot of unis based on the modules and maths level needed. I have also completed a lot of taster lectures, essay competitions and work experience to make sure this is what I want to do! But I fully understand what you’re saying!!

Im in the exact same situation im predicted an ABB but its probably going to move up to an AAB however the B is in maths whilst most of these unis require an A in maths. Do you think its too risky to apply?

Risky for all your choices, but certainly not for one or two.

I would advise you to flip this on its head. Let's say you get offered and accepted with a Maths B grade. There is a good reason why an A grade is a pre-requisute. The maths in elite level Bsc Economics programmes is really tough and you may have students on your course that have A* grades in Maths and potentially Further Maths. Indeed, the course may feel more like an applied maths degree rather than anything that feels like A level Economics. Your chosen university is unlikley to run two-tier streams, so if you cant handle the maths, you may find the course miserable and get left behind relative to your peers. So, you may wish to consider either a mid-level BSc course or focus on BA alternatives, where the maths will be less challenging. Sorry if this feels negative, but sometimes the best advice you can recieve is.
