EU Student Finance complex case

Hello Everyone,

I have been working in the UK ever since I could ( 2020) ,

From 2024 I wanted to re-start education while working which made me automatically eligible for full funding as a migrant worker under pre-settled status.

However as I was approaching joining university I have been dealing with some issue at work and outside of work which severely affected my mental health which I am currently going under counselling session to get better.

During the year despite being able to find job fillers to replace my previous stable employment nothing could last long enough to apparently keep my status so my maintenance loans has been cut in the middle of the year.

I have been going beyond and above to try to keep something but as soon as a employee would be made aware of my complications in a job interview they would refuse to employ me so this has left me a tight spot.

My savings were put at risk but it was still enough to covers most expenses.

Now 2025 I have been eligible for the EU Settled status since the beginning of this current academic year and I am still awaiting for a decision for my application .

However my savings were basically stolen during my ongoing vulnerable period and I am in need of full funding more than ever to pursue my studies.

I have recently found some zero hours contract of fully remote jobs which could potentially fit really well my circumstances and would love to keep permanently

But I wonder if it will be enough to obtain a migrant worker status as I am in serious financial distress I can't barely focus on uni or anything at all.

Just have in mind I haven't applied to student finance as well and I am currently at risk of being withdrawn. All these years of effort for nothing...

Hi there,

What nationality are you and when did you get your settled status? What year of your course are you currently in?

Thanks, Drew

Hi there,

First of all, the moment you get Settled Status you should upload proof of that online: normally, that means you'll be entitled to the Maintenance Loan without having to prove that you're working.

Do you have any UK or EU family members that are working in the UK right now? It's just that, since you have pre-settled status your options are

1) Apply for the Tuition Fee only, or
2) Apply as the Migrant Worker and receive the Maintenance Loan

Thanks, Graeme

Hi there,

No you could not apply as a Migrant Worker through your cousin. Have you started a job with a zero hour contract and do you know when you should hear back about your settled status?

Thanks, Drew

Hey
I am just getting started with my new job and my settled status is in the process of getting an emergency treatment by the home office because of the complexity of my situation.

Hi there,

Have you applied for UK funding as a Migrant Worker or do you have the Tuition Fee Loan only for the 2025/26 academic year?

Thanks, Drew

Hi
I sent my application as a Mirgant worker for the 25/26 year.

Hi there,

I would advise you send a copy of your employment contract. This would need to include your employment start start date, your contract hours per week(it can show it is a zero hour contract) and it must be signed and dated by either the employee or employer. I would also advise you upload any payslips you may have and if you have not already done so then you can also send your P45 for your previous job. This can all be uploaded from your online account.

Thanks, Drew
