Best UK unis for Politics?

I’m aiming for AAA at A-level and would love to study Politics. Aberystwyth is on my list, but I’m also curious about bigger cities and options for things like political journalism or becoming an MP. Has anyone studied Politics at these unis or have advice on which might be the best fit for this career path? 😊

No Uni course is going to qualify you as an MP. A degree is an academic course - politics as theory, not 'how to get into Parliament'.

You need to look carefully at the course content for any Politics course - what is on offer as optional units in all years of each course, and think about what you would actually choose to do if you went there. It would also help you to go to some Uni Open Days and to think about 'what going to Uni' is all about.

Hi! I'm currently studying Politics at Aber and I'm loving it, the uni does a parliamentary placement scheme in 2nd or 3rd year where you get to go and work for an MP for a few weeks, if you're looking to get more into the MP side of things this would be great option! i know i also visited Cardiff for an open day and their politics department is right next to the Welsh Senedd/Government Buildng (and im pretty sure they also do placements) so also an incredibly ideal location if you're into that sort of career path. Obviously if you're aiming for AAA you could potentially get into a place like LSE which is one of the best places for politics studies in the country (only downside is its smack bang in the middle of London). Let me know if you have any questions about Aber specifically! i'd love to help

Hey, if you’re thinking about the MP route I think it would be more beneficial to add further emphasis on practical application. Find a party that you most align with and email the offices of your MLAs to try and get work experience. From there, opportunities will present themselves and you should hopefully be able to work your way up to MP. However obviously a degree is more than beneficial but I guess I’m just trying to reinforce that there is more to politics than just a qualification. I hope this is helpful and goodluck!
