Biochem or Biomed: Which is better for me?

I’m stuck between Biochemistry and Biomedical Science and would love to hear from students who chose either. What helped you decide and how are you finding your course?

Ultimately, it comes down to your individual interests and career aspirations. Biochemistry is more focused on the chemical and molecular functions of living organisms, while Biomedical Science is broader, with a focus on health, disease, and diagnostics, and such research may include both laboratory and possibly human participants, too.

Hi @Donna122 👋

That is a great question and something a lot of people consider. I study Biochemistry at the University of Essex. I chose Biochemistry because I knew I loved both Biology and Chemistry at A level and wanted to find out more and have a deeper understanding of all the topics I loved! 🧪

Biomedical Science which is also a degree that Essex offers is a great choice, but it is more medical based. For example in first year biomedical students have an anatomy and physiology module, whereas Biochemistry students have an inorganic chemistry module. So, it really does depend on what your interested in!

However, I'm in second year now and I am really enjoying my course and I'm sure you'll be pleased with whatever course you choose! 😀

I hope this helps and please let us know if you have any more questions 😊
